    Default Port Line c1940

Hi - I wonder if there is anyone who has relative/s who sailed on the Port Line c1940? My late father was George Nicoll from Monifieth in Angus. He sailed on Port Jackson and Caroline. One of his friends was Guy Hedley from the North of England somewhere. Dad was an engineer.

    Hello Iris
Sorry I can’t help with any connections but there is a ships manifest with a George Allenby Nicoll aged 25 aboard the “Port Jackson” which arrived in New York 23rd July 1943 having sailed from Liverpool

he signed on as 2nd Refrig Engineer in Liverpool on the 12th July 1943 he had been at sea for 3 years , his height was 5’ – 9” and weight 170lbs
There was a George Hedley as an Ass Engineer aged 20 signed on the same time
no one by the Christian name Guy

The ship sailed again for N.Z via the Panama Canal on the 2nd August 1943

    Default George Allenby Nicoll

    Hello Ray.

I am so sorry but after all this time I just discovered your reply! I just decided to look in today on a whim.

Dad was born in 1920 so he wouldn't have been 25 in 1943. However, I wonder if an error has been made with his age? Also, I wonder if Guy Hedley's actual name was George but maybe used Guy in preference. It does sound right in other respects. Sailing from Liverpool and 2nd Engineer e etc.

You might not get this given that it's so long since you kindly replied to me.

    Kind regards
    Iris Symon

    Hello Iris
I would say it is the correct person looking closer at the ships manifest the age is quite blurred it could well be 23 years old , the ages that are shown on these manifest can veary anythig by 2/3 years either way

    Hello Ray

Thank you for your reply. I should really check this site more often.

Can you tell me if I could see the document that you refer to? Just out of interest.

    Regards
    Iris
