    Smile Happy and sad days

    Hello to all,
I spent a number of years at sea as a supernumery. My husband was a engineering officer with Ellermans and Ellerman Papyani. They were happy idylic days full of joy meeting new crew members with each ship joined. My late husband died in a tragic accident on the City of Ottawa whilst we were berthed in Calcutta many years ago now, but my love for the sea and globe-trotting has never left me...so I live overlooking the sea now in the Hebrides..
I joined this group as there were some lovely mails which re-kindled happy memories.
So here I am just saying a big hello and introducing myself!
    Kind regards to all, Jane
Oh dear...no spell check! excuse me!

Welcome to this great site, Jane. If you give a few details of ships and dates, you may well find some of the guys you sailed with. I well remember passing Ellerman ships in the 1950s. They were, "Well smart", to use modern vernacular!

    Default Re Happy and sad..Jane

Thank you for my welcoming mails!
I was 'on board' between 1971-1976..City of Sparta, City of Ottawa and many more..some of the ships were containers and some long hall. The short hauls the Medi run to Israel, stopping en route to whichever port the ship was posted. The longer ones Canada, S. America, S.Africa, India, Sri Lanka..America..so many more countries. I have so many very happy memories of friendships and kindness, often being the only woman on board...very spoilt
I use to play chess and darts..became quite good in high seas!!! I met some very amazing gentlemen and their wives. I hope the camaradrie still exists at sea?

Thank you so much, I was under the impression they had been sold on, so are these archive photos?
I think it will some time before I get use to using the site, navigating around! It is so sad to see most of the fine ships gone.
My life at sea was fantastic. I can so understand how difficult it is to leave the sea and all things familiar. It is a way of life. Fortunatley living in the Hebrides I am always only a short ride to the sea and I overlook it from my home...the sea still feels like my spiritual home. I know no one who has been at sea alas here, except when take groups for memory training, and we have some amazing men very brave and very proud to have served in the M.N. Now I may consider computer training for them as I am sure these brave men would love to be back into the spirit of the sea and like-mindedness! So thank you for welcoming me here! Kind regards, Jane

Hi Ron...I will give you a BIG clue...It's in my user name!!!
Sorry, that is so mean isn't it? Now then...? ;~))))
I see you are in Scotland to Ron? I had a few friends visit me from days of old...alas the CO-OP (our only supermarket) ran out of the elixiers of life...well nearly! Yes, I noticed many talking about the open bars at sea. in mails
I stared buying my own 'slim'line soft drinks' progressed to beer...enjoyed cocktails...er...er...
I cannot do hangovers, so I am quite blessed...or is that just denial?!!! No seriously, the Hebrides have some very very heavy drinkers, it is part cultural...the years at sea gave me a good insight plus training as a psychiatric nurse to the dangers of alcohol l misuse...dash..I still have lessons to learn though! Kind thoughts, Jane
