Help needed

I am trying to search for records of my husband's grandfather's immigration from England to Canada sometime between 1901 and 1911. There are no records on steam ship liner manifests, and I suspect that he may have arrived on a merchant ship. So far, I have gotten nowhere with my search. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
