I was on the riebeeck castle in april 1960.she was a union castle fruit boat,running down to south Africa for mainly oranges and apples.i was an e.d.h(EFFICIENT DECK HAND)captain carr ran the ship.he was a short bloke but a right little tyrant.he kept us on our toes,we were right glad to dock back in Southampton and pay off.such is life.

Did you know anyone called peter woods? South African working on the union castle ships in before 1960

UCL had a liking for giving their captains names.
Logger Lloyd, Swivel Eye Lloyd, Granny Smythe, Humpty back on the Windsor and now doubt a few others.

I sailed with both swivel and logger lloyd, But remember A A Freer whilst serving on the Rochester Castle and Willy Williamson on the Rustenburg Castle, he insisted on conducting the O0mpha band in the bar on the Reifer bahn in Hamberg till funds ran dry. Happy Days.
