Cornerstone.

This word has turned up in a few posts but rather than carry on with and find I am invading someone else’s property , will put this query brand new so as not to step on someone’s fingers.
Cornerstone must be one of the oldest words in the Christian history and is the representation of the basics of the religion . When a temple or Church is built , the first stone or brick is laid in the NE corner of the intended structure and it is from this stone that the religion itself is risen to other heights. Other religions I am not aware of but others might know if their beliefs differ to any great extent. So someone’s post about the cornerstone being the basis of democracy while likely to be true to some others may not see it that way. Back to the war of the words and not the war of the worlds.Graham who studies words may have a word to say on its origin. In short the corner stone was originally the first foundation stone laid in Christian places of worship . JS

Yes John very true and often with the name of the person who laid it.

But cornerstones exist in other parts of life, it could be said the mother is the corner stone of the family.
As I often say free speech is a corner stone of our democracy.

Corner stones are the building blocks of some thig much bigger, but are the foundation of any structure.

My old man was a builder either stone or bricks , and locally in UK where I used to live he built for councils and private owners the likes of Bathing stations and other public buildings. He always used to leave his initials in the same place usually just with his trowel AVS . JS

True Des, but compared with some countries our style is fairly open and democratic.
But to be fully honest, not yet and maybe never.
