    Default How times have changed

I have been interested in this program of space travel, which reaches its final stage today, and got me thinking what changes i have seen in my short lifetime. from first going to sea, and as we have all discussed, only a radio to the outside world, and a hoped for letter when we reach port in 3 weeks or so. Now worldwide contact by phone at virtually any time, TV beamed anywhere in the world, man on the moon, and the knowledge coming in from space etc etc. At times life is moving so fast, and as we get older , we seem to get older faster, ah well, that's my New Year wander down the nostalgic lane, kt

Keith, I think our generation must have seen the biggest and most changes in technology and lifestyle of any generation. As you say the advances in communication alone are mind boggling. My concerns are that social media has in a way caused more harm than good. The bullying of children and the sexual exploitation of children being two such awful outcomes. Also standards have dropped dramatically on TV. I am in no way a prude but I find the use of the ' F ' word commonplace on TV and embarrassing in front of Grandchildren and the likes of that Keith Lemon whether a caricature or not, absolutely appalling. Children see unacceptable behaviour on TV and Social Media and take it as acceptable and it all becomes self perpetuating. Certainly progress has been fast and furious and has many benefits especially in health but there are also unfortunately the darker sides too. I would like to think that the good outweighs the bad. The next question of course is ' Where do we go from here and what do we hope to achieve ' - answers on a postcard ...............

I don't know if it's the same programme but I've been following a similar series on Radio 4 where they are now talking about a base on the moon as a permanent feature and taking very long trips to Mars I think it's to coincide with the 50th anniversary of the moon landings . There seems to have been a lot of looking into the future by the BBC on Radio 4 and there was a good program the other day on what are we looking at in the future and artificial intelligence seems to be high on the agenda . There is also been quite a lot of serious discussion about climate change and knowing that it can be quite controversial here what are the things that interested me was that one learning professor was saying that as stars ie our sun get older they will get hotter so in the distant future we need to look at where do we move to as humanity so we can survive . Listening to him made me think that no matter what we do we are like private Frazer used to say in Dad's Army doomed
