    Default Terrorism

It's not widely known, but my home town University of St Andrews - where Prince William met his bride-to-be - was the world's foremost authority on terrorism, before most people had heard of the word.

Yes John, but only at the St Andrews Golf Club. Like women, they were barred from the Royal and Ancient. I read quite recently that the R&A was going to admit women to membership. Golf was the religion of my family. Great-great grandads James Braid and Jamie Anderson won the British Open 8 times between them. Great-great uncle - if that's the term - Willie Anderson won the US Open 4 times. How on earth did I end up with the name William Braid Anderson, I wonder?

Hi Ivan, a story from great uncle 'Tip' Anderson, the favourite caddy of people like President Eisenhower, Bing Crosby etc, who was full of anecdotes.
One day, in the off season, a rich Texan came for a round of golf, with Tip as his caddy. Standing at the first tee, he looked around at the building taking place opposite the R&A clubhouse.
    "What's that, caddy?"
"That's going to be the new Grand Hotel, sir."
"How high is it going to be?"
"Eight stories I believe sir. They started building a year ago, and say it should be finished in another eighteen months."
"My God," says the Texan. "Back in Texas, eighteen stories, six months. What's the par for this Hole?"
    "Par four, sir."
"Gawd, back in Texas par two, just a drive and a putt."
"Aye sir, but you have to watch out for the road crossing the fairway, and the Swilcan Burn on the other side."
"No problem," says the Texan, taking a mighty drive. The ball soars through the air, one bounce off the road, and into the burn.
They get to the burn, four feet deep vertical concrete sides, and the Texan scratches his head. There's only a trickle of water, with sand in the bottom, so he takes off his socks and shoes, jumps down, and studies the ball. Then he shakes his head, and holds out his hand for Tip to pull him up again. Tip calmly places the putter in his hand, saying
"Now for one hell of a putt."

Back to great uncle Tip. For the rest of the round, Tip was subjected to a long monologue on the biggest, best, tallest, fastest, all in Texas. Finally, back at the clubhouse, the Texan says "Listen Caddy, I'm going to North Berwick for a round tomorrow, do you know it, and would you be able to caddy for me?"
"Oh aye, I know it well sir, and they're friends o' mine there."
Next morning they set off in the Texan's hired Jaguar, with the Texan himself driving at a dangerous speed. They arrive at North Queens Ferry; this is long before the Forth road bridge. The Texan gets out to stretch his legs while waiting for the ferry. He looks up at the Forth Railway Bridge and says "Gawd, caddy, what in hell is that?"
Tip sticks his head out of the window, looks up with a puzzled frown, and replies "Ah dinna ken, sir. It wasna' there last month."

Years ago, when our youngest son was 15 my wife and I thought it safe enough to leave our kids at home in Auckland and do a coach tour of the UK and Ireland. We picked a 21 night Insight tour and really had a great time. However when we reached Edinburgh there was a monumental back-log of coaches due to bad weather that could not get across the Irish Sea because of gales and high seas -- this resulted in a huge shortage of hotel accommodation in England, Scotland and Wales. Our scheduled hotel in the Scottish capital was full to capacity so Insight had to look around for somewhere for our coach to stay. We finished up in the R&A for three nights and enjoyed all the facilities for free, the rack rate for our suite was 1200 pounds per night and that did not include meals, but Insight were paying !! I became friendly with a Texan who told me that he had been at the Old Course hotel for two months waiting for his turn to play a round on that famous course and he said he would wait as long as it took but he was determined to get that round of golf on that course. He was paying 1200 a night also, so how much did that round finally cost ?? Regards Peter in NZ.

#8, Thank goodness for a happy ending Peter! I thought your story was going to be about your 15yr old son having a wild party and your home being trashed....
