Re: UK Tourist Attractions Get Mandarin Makeover
Doc,
I can still say that name! A Welsh cabin-mate patiently taught me how to say it and I've remembered it all these years. We won a few bets for me saying it. My mate would sucker guys in a bar getting them interested and trying to say it, and I would appear as an uninterested bystander. I would ask him to repeat it, close my eyes in deep concentration, then once more just a little slower and the pronounce I've got it. Money would get laid down, my mate would cover it and I would say it slowly—I'll write it phonetically. Clan-vwah-pwith-gwin- gill-goh-gerr-qwin-drop-lanti-silly-ogh-ohg-ohg-chh! Bummer! trying to say it slow in syllables is almost impossible. I may have missed an og or two.
If you can make out the young dude behind the railway sign, that's me at the tender age of 47. Our first trip to Europe after we retired.
Cheers, Rodney

Re: UK Tourist Attractions Get Mandarin Makeover
This thread reminds me of the old joke.
Two English chaps stop at Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilil iogogogoch for a bite to eat. After the attractive blonde buxom waitress takes their order one of the chaps for a bet asks her to pronounce where they are. She sighed, put down her notepad and pen leaned over the table and replied burr gerrr kkinng

Re: UK Tourist Attractions Get Mandarin Makeover
In South Walien we just say Llanfairpg. The name means "St Mary's church in the hollow of the white hazel near to the fierce whirlpool and the church of St Tysilio of the red cave"
K.
ADDED: Llanfairpwll - How to Say the Name Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilio gogogoch
