Brian they said when it was paid for it would be free to go through.I remember when I was a van boy just before going to Gravesend we used to go over to the Wirral in the laundry van once a week and it was 2 bob i think,now £2.50 each way it will never be free.

The Mersey Tunnel holds good memories for me. I proposed to my wife driving though the tunnel in 1962. She accepted and we married in 1963 in Holywell Flintshire, thats 51 years ago. Still going strong..

when we were kids we would say to other kids there's a leak in the Mersey Tunnel,when the kid asked in amazement what happened we would reply,a farmer dropped it on his way through.

I can recall on certain Sundays during school holidays in the summer in the late 40's and early fifties being able to cycle through the MerseyTunnel from my home in Liverpool to North Wales. It was certainly hard going especially the climb at the Wallasey end.Out all day with my Raleigh Trent Sports fixed wheel bike with just a bottle of water to sustain me.

They used to say after a good night in Yates's wine lodge on the Aussie Whites you would be putting your arm down the Mersey Tunnel for rabbits!!!
