Do yo you ever think how our lives have changed in the past 50 years or so.
Now more valve radios- replaced with transistors.
Mobile phones.
More and more computers.
Television only two stations 50 years ago.
Electric watches
Colour televisions
Steam gave way to diesel and diesel seems to have given way to electric propulsion.
Bridge control, automated engine rooms.
Car engine controls that are so complex that its difficult for an owner to repair.
Man going to the moon.
There are many more, but is life better?

Vic in response the short answer is NO. Seems that there is no money to made if everyone understands how things work and able to repair them at home. So by constantly changing things to confuse us all the multi nationals and politicians can keep the trough filled that they are gathered around. Some could say that medical science has improved our lives. Well years ago one could go into hospital with confidence that they would not end up with infections that we had never heard of before. Just one thing that show's how bloody stupid we all are. Today we now have new televisions that can do nearly everything but still show the same crap that we have always had on the old analogue sets but we pay out a small fortune for them. To make matters worse they are even harder to program. Get this they do not last as long as the old sets either. Just one example of so many.

The mention of Electronic watches on this thread brings a story to mind. Just on 2 years ago I saw on ebay a Seiko Watch for sale, it was advertised as a Seiko Automatic with day and date. I managed to win the auction and got it foir £21.00. When the watch arrived it was in a bit of dirty state, but cleaned up really well. It is indeed an automatic just like the ones we bought in Aden or other duty free ports. The wrist action and movement of the arm keeps the watch going which back in the 60's was the height of technology. Last summer I had occasion to go to Timpsons which is a large retail outfit in the UK doing shoe repairs and watch repairs etc. The Manager served me and he saw that I had a Seiko watch on my wrist and asked if he could have a look at it which he did. Then out of the blue he asked me did I want to sell it, to which I replied not really. He said he would offer me £320.00 for it there and then. I asked him why he wanted it and he told me that he collected Seiko watches as a hobby and said that my watch was a good example of Seiko watches from that period and also the day is featured in English and French. When I told him how much I paid . he could not believe it. Sorry but have diverted on this thread a bit, but what
I am coming to is - how much of all this new fangled stuff will be worth 15 - 20 times more than what it is worth now.

Itwas ironlc the other day reading the comments of two Snr.Members complaining about Facebook users wasting their lives sitting in front of a PC.

T he gents in question,going by the number of posts they have submitted to this site would leave me, a regular user of Fb. for dead.

If they bothered to spend a bit time working out the ins and outs they might have a different opinion of the thing,a great bit of new tech'.

Len , as have never been on Face Book to my knowledge, was always scared of going on as heard different stories on. Do you actually have to sign on. Do they in any way get information from this site. Have a cousin here who all the time is on and swears by it as keeps in contact with a lot of people in the UK. The only site I go on is this one,did go on Ships Nostalgia years ago, but had trouble getting on site and didnt bother. Am not too proficient on computer and am not too keen to learn anymore of this so called technology, dont even have a mobile phone. However can access this site unless down and send an email, which is quite sufficient for my needs. Face Book and Twitter and others wouldnt even know about am not even curious about. Apart from this post querying its contents. Cheers John S

Think I might be one of those guilty ones Len is on about and yes I noticed that I have over 800 posts on site and taking it that I have been a member since around 2002 I suppose that is around an average of two a week so better start getting a life had I not. Got to admit that the washing machine and dish washer has had a huge impact on my life since getting married.
