    Default R.R.S. John Biscoe

I was told that on one of its trips "south", one of the passengers, a returning Fid* I believe, was locked in a cabin - mental trouble I think.
He apparently put his head out of the porthole, looked up and saw the Old Man looking out of his porthole.

"Have they locked you up too?"

    * A Fid is a person who has spent time in the Antarctic with the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, later to be renamed British Antarctic Survey.

I'm an ex-fid, having spent 14 months there, wintering at Deception in 62.

I went to Deception Island in 2009, not changed much, just as cold.

Fids came in varying sizes, the same as portholes. Cheers JS

A trip to the Antarctic is one of the best trips you can do.
We did a 35 day trip down there in 2009, It is an incredible place tho` I did get injured by a Bull Elephant Seal, broken collar bone, clavicle, and torn Clavicular Ligaments resulting in an operation when I returned home. but it was worth iot.
    The Penguins were magic.
It ended at Grytviken in South Georgia by Shackleton`s grave.
    Wonderful experience.
    Cheers
    Brian.
