Trouble is, it's a load of old cock!

First of all, it's in America, and who would go to war, and where, in 1914?

Second, the bike is much too modern for 1914.

Thirdly, it'd be in a far worse state if it had been there that long!

I believe I've read somewhere that it dates from the 50s, and there's no departing serviceman or anything like that attached to the real story.

There is something screw ball about that picture -- even years after leaving the bike leaning against the tree the tree may have grown around the bike but it would still be at ground level. Surely trees grow upwards from the middle and gain a bit of girth at the same time !! Peter in NZ.

The fact is that it does exist, the photo has been around for a long time and does appear to be genuine. I thought US was involved in WW1could have been someone who went to Europe to serve with the allies maybe?

That is sure one long bike when you really look at it. Would not mind getting a set of tyres made of that rubber for the car as well.
That's the way the mop flops.

My thanks to Brian for this site.

Peter some years ago, I (in my wisdom!) screwed a hanging basket bracket at eye level to a tree in my garden, the tree has grown around the bracket but I now need a ladder to reach it. Cannot comment on the veracity of picture shown, but if the bike was left at ground level some 60 years or more ago then it would certainly not be still at ground level.

Sorry to say you could be wrong, but the fact is trees grow from the top, not the bottom so the bike could well still be there.

John, can only speak from my own experience of the tree in my garden. Rgds
