Half a century
June 11th a day of significance, not as significant as June 6th or September 3rd, but significant just the same.
Significant for the Beatles who arrived at Adelaide airport South Australia on that day. Significant for the thousands of screaming fans who met them at the airport.
Attatched a thumbnail from an exhibition currently running at the Arts Centre in Melbourne, set to commemorate the event of fifty years ago.
But a day of significance just the same. At 0700 hours the New Zealand Shipping Company 10,004 ton cargo ship 'Paparoa' tied up at berth 17 North Port Melbourne.
My first day in Australia, a significant day for me.
I have some great mamories of my time in Melbourne then, the young Australian girl who wanted to please, and please she did. The events outside the Southern Cross hotel where the Beatles were staying, being told to go home by the police after an attempt to gain entrance to the hotel via a fire escape. An alcoholic hazy memeory of being ejected from Young and Jacksons when one of the guys asked for Soup in a Basket.
Half a century ago, where were you then and what were you doing?

P.S. No need for you to answer Cappy, we know you were busy removing a splinter you got from the wooden leg of Mary.

Re: Half a century
Nothing of significance for me either John. Was on P&O's Iberia and saw the Olympic Games in Japan.

Re: Half a century
I was a Training steward on a charter flight of British Eagles aircraft carrying troops from Istanbul to Bombay, durring this time we lost an engine so followed the coast most of the way in case of a quick emergency landing was neccessary and we could divert as required. all went well and we arrived in Bombay, the Pax had a meal served on the ground whilst the engineer fixed the aircraft, then they took off for their final destination of Singapore with another crew. we overnighted and picked up another full flight to Singapore, stayed there until the 14th then flew to Hong Kong, overnighted then flew down to Labuan with 86 Ghurka troops and their officers. whilst waiting for the steps to arrive the officer in charge said to his troops "all out" and everyone of them jumped to the ground 15ft below the door, then ran over and lined up on the tarmac like a morning roll call. it was quite amazing to see as not one of them hesitated to jump. we waited about 4 hours and returned to Singapore with 102 more that had just come out of the jungle,

Re: Half a century
Cannot remember the exact date but know it was sometime in June that the Headmaster, a useless git, at the all boys Grammar School I was at, told us all that in the September term we would be moving to a brand new built school that was the amalgamation of three schools in the area and there would be GIRLS in the new school, hence most of my class mates turning out to be dummys when it came to O level exam time, a couple of years with flighty young girls in mini skirts flashing their knickers or running round the sports field in tight shorts were far more interesting than studying English, Maths, Science, Geography etc. in preparation for O levels, especially if you had an all female table at school dinners, two of whom had wandering hands!!!!!
