My late father Andrew Yule
I am looking for information about my late father Andrew Yule. My father was a chief engineer with Shell Oil for many years, he often talked about his trips but didn't go into great detail about his career with Shell. I am after information about his career and the people he worked with.
My father was Andrew Yule d.o.b. 18th November 1934, he married Jean Russel Hepburn, he has three sons, John, Andrew (myself) and Colin. He lived with his family in Kirkcaldy Fife.
If there are any members who knew my father or sailed with him please get in touch so myself and my brothers can find out more about him.
My father passed away peacefully surrounded by his sons on the 17th August 2014 at Victoria hospital, Kirkcaldy.

Re: My late father Andrew Yule
Hello Doc,
I am sorry to say my father was not born in Glasgow, he was born and grew up in the Fife area. My father had no middle initials, I believe he was the youngest chief engineer that had served on a Shell tanker. He would tell me story's of how he used to be flown out to ships to join them and that he was flown to where ever a Shell tanker was being refitted to oversee it and sign the work off to his satisfaction. I hope this is of some help.
Many thanks for your reply.

Re: My late father Andrew Yule
The name Yule strikes a bell somewhere. Is however not an uncommon name. If any lightning flashes happen and remember will let you know. All the best in your search. JS

Re: My late father Andrew Yule
Andrew,
There are a number of ex Shell Tankermen on this site, myself included. I was wondering if perhaps you could give the name of the ships he served on, that might help trigger memories.
Good Luck
John

Re: My late father Andrew Yule
Ref. Marians Post #5. Was in collision with a Dutch passenger vessel in the River Plate in 1962. The last thing of this ships name before the bow was torn off was Ruys, so if not the same ship probably the same Company. Went onboard her after the collision when alongside in BA, met the master who was on his final trip to sea before retirement and had a blameless career throughout. He didn't reckon on a Geordie tramp breaking his record. Met a few of the mates and engineers, somehow don't think the name yule strikes any bells, unless the searcher for information has knowledge of him being in a collision at the same time. Cheers JS

Re #1.
Andrew, if your dear father started work as an engineering apprentice when he left school, that means he must have went to sea between 1955-1956 as a Junior Engineer Officer when he was either 21 or 22 years old.
Other than that, he must have joined Shell Tankers Ltd, as an Engineering Cadet.
Best Regards,
FOURO.

Re: My late father Andrew Yule
I sailed with your father on the SS Haustellum when I was an engineer cadet. It was my first voyage and I was quite intimidated by your father initially, I know that he certainly enjoyed more than a dram or two and I liked my 'tinnies' in the ships bar.
The vessel was standing off 'Point Fortin' in Trinidad and it was in 1974, with me joining the haustellum by pilot cutter, for a five month voyage around the world, with some interesting and occasionally scary events taking place in the 'pit'.
