Re Arthur Hawley
Hi I am seeking any information on my Great uncle Arthur Hawley. He apparently was working on the SS Matatua in the early 1900`s. I have found out that he jumped ship in New Zealand in 1913. What I would like to know is when he first boarded this ship and in what capacity he was working, also if he was on any other ships around this time. Un fortunately he was killed missing in action in New Guinea in ww2 while working for the U.S.Army small ships section. I have very little information on his early life, when he first left England and would be most grateful for any answers to my enquiries. Thank you, Roger

Re: Re Arthur Hawley
Thanks for your prompt reply. Arthur was born in 1888 at Battersea, London so he would have been 25 when he left that ship in New Zealand. I have the impression he may have been a cook on board, though I don`t know if he started as that. Hope this may help. Roger

Re: Re Arthur Hawley
Hi again. Spot on that is the Arthur Hawley I am related to. He was my late mothers uncle. He settled in Australia . After he jumped ship in New Zealand he married a Rhoda Whiteley on the 4th august 1914 and they left for Australia the next day, I think, as Rhoda`s mother had passed away.
