I remember at the time, the question being asked as to why she had stern engines.
But looking at most ships today one could say she along with her sister ship Southern Cross were the fore runners of todays ships.

Shaw Saville decided it was about time to keep those horny engineers as far away from the female passengers as they could.

One of the main reasons why most ships went all aft accomodation especially in tramp ships was because it gave the ship more cubic capacity , by increasing hold space and doing away with the shaft tunnel from having the engines midships . Also decreased the building costs. There are other more minor considerations also. JS...

#5 and when your H O E was 70'+ above the waterline when on the bridge in bad weather your body went through gyrations that would have suited astranaut training.

That was one of the minor considerations Ivan. They never thought of see-saws prior to building. Probably the Naval Architect got a knighthood for making seamen sea sick. JS

I sailed on Northern Star November 1972, should have been Melbourne to Southampton but due to yet another engine failure I was flown to Sydney. I remember crossing the equator some one thought it would be funny to do 360 not taking into account the dining room had been set for dinner and consequently all the china was smashed to the floor!
