    Default The Noisy Navy.

They can be heard upto 100 miles away, does that sound a bit of an exageration.

British warships are 'so noisy' Russian submarines can hear them 100 miles away

Jim, the article is not quite true, the problem is overheating of the engine cooling systems in warm seas.
Bad, proposed a tried and tested propulsion system for the destroyers, MOD boffins rejected it and went for an unproven system, now it's the yards fault.
    Regards
    Vic

Jim with today's technology with satellites in space that can read 'made in China' on a box of matches it's probably immaterial how noisy they are, however according to various military sources Russian submarines are so noisy the Americans and British always know where they are, reputedly the British subs are currently the quietest in service (no! not because they are tied up in port). It seems on surface warships too much emphasis has been placed on their superstructure and hull forms having angled decks and bulkheads to deflect radar waves into space rather than back to the parabolic transmitter in the radar scanner and little attention has been paid to the stealth factor, so it is highly probable that a submarine can hear a noisy vessel at 100 miles. In WWII submarines could hear slow revving merchant ships at 12-15 miles, and probably greater distances at war's end, so a fast revving warship engine would cause no problem and technology has certainly moved on
