Hi i am new to this and would like to communicate with anyone who has sailed on the alcantara preferably the catering department close to it's last voyage. as i have written a book in which the alcantara is featured, i would like to compare my memory to real events.

Aragon was my first boat 1966 as bell hop Cabin Class,that gong still makes me smile, hardly old enough to shave, two weeks in BA ! :) We would leave there looking yellow.

Was Pastry Chef on the Aragon for one trip in 61. The years I was at sea, the only ship I didnt enjoy. Chief baker was an a***h. And surprisingly an Irishman. As a rule, good-uns.

I was a Royal Mail man as was my father and brother. my first voyage was on Loch Ryan as Steward's Boy,1950, then four trips on Alcantara as Bell Boy1950/51 it was great, then joined Asturias as Pursers Steward did eleven trips from 6/1951 to 9/1953 on the Australian migrant run that was her last voyage, I stood on the quay side in Southampton Docks to see her sail for Hong Kong to the breakers yard, very sad day for me, had many fond memories of that ship.

THE "A" BOATS OUT OF London great and happy ships . Sailed out of Tilbury 21 /1/60 maiden voyage on Amazon, all the way parties ,oh what a work up,signed off St patricks day 1960 .next was Aragon was called after a region in Spain signed on 11 /4/60 in KG5 docks after that was Arlanza done 5 trips on her then as one menber remarked the Deseado may 65 London -BA-London oh was I sick or was I, then back to Arlanza for 10 trips, anybody recall the Chief Steward Joe Harding 2nd steward Frankie Plum the were 2 class guys, my best shipmate Dennis Gamble Lounge Steward me Eamonn Lido Steward March 1966 tiLL Nov 1967 those were the days , foootbal guys would recall England playing Argentina in the Worldcup of 1966 were the Argentine Captain Ratine was sent off during the game against England whilst we were mid way there oh we did take some stick in BA however I still got my quoto of BIFI DE LOMO at the meat factory enough said I ll stop now anybody know the where abouts of DENNIS GAMBLE

What memories of that A boat run! Four or five voyages down in the engine room of the Arlanza in the 60īs s remain vividly in my memory. (It also seems a very time ago!) I remember some colourful characters: lecky Angus Brown, Ian Malcomson 4th Eng, Ian Machin 3rd Eng, lecky Clive ( last name escapes me) Dawes ((first name escapes me) Brian Marshall, :D Ch. Eng Rutherford and many others. Hopefully a few will surface on this site. Cheers Peter
