The A boat run to B A

I did 5 months on the Aragon in 1968. Smashing living conditions after 3 years on the Andes,all 2 berth cabins. I would have stayed longer had the money (tips) been any good.The last time I saw her was in Barbados after I had returned to the Andes. She had been handed over to Shaw Savil and was on her way to the Panama Canal. I read somewhere on the net that she ended her days as a car ferry in the Far East.
Though I had been cruising on the Andes for 3 years by then, the South American run was fantastic.(or is that just my memories: ).From KG5,Tilbury.Las Palmas,Rio,Recife,Santos,Montevideo and BA, you couldn't ask for more. A run ashore in those days was a run ashore.;) Lots of happy memories and something the lads at sea today won't experience.

I did one trip on the Aragon July-Aug 1965 as Pursers gopher/1st class page boy. Who remembers the uniform? Looked like an Argentinian General in a rather fetching maroon and gold" !!!!
The trip was superb.

I too thought 'A' boays only refered to 'Aragon; Amazon' and 'Arlanza'

I also did two trips on the 'Brasil Star' July-November 1966. Such happy memories of South America.

I only found this site this morning, I did the BA run on the Andes from 1956 and stayed with her as a cruise liner until 1963, anyone else that old out there ??

On joining the MN ( Royal Mail Lines) as 3rd lecky and after relieving duty on various RM vessels Iwas appointed to" HIGHLAND CHIEFTAIN"on which I done 7 trips on run to BA .from !(1953 to 1955)

transfering Spanish & Portugese imigrants to Brazil & BA (outward )& frozen meat Home,
The accomodation was poor ,food was very good .
Charlie Laird was Senr 2nd ,great bloke ,most of the engrs were from Isle of Wight .
Refrig Eng was called Recker , (not to his face of course)very nice bloke ,engrs ,Irecall Bill Mason ,3rd
Peter Ralph ,4th eng
Remember the arches in BA ,& tension in BA just after Eva Peron died,

how can we possibly describe b.a. santos and rio to shoresiders of today.
i feel very priviledged to have been a part of the late fifties early seventies merchant service.such great times on many runs.
