When I was deep sea it was usual to have Sunday morning as inspection day of all quarters on the vessel including fridges freezers pantries etc. those with the master were the heads of departments . Usually at the end of which they all resumed the inspection by any qualifying remarks about the results , accompanied of course by a lemonade in the masters cabin.This was usually the time of signing the OLB. A knot is one nautical mile per hour. A nautical mile is one minute of latitude. The earth is not round as many believe but an elliptical shape with its polar diameter approximately 27 nautical miles less than its equatorial diameter, therefore a nautical mile will vary whatever latitude you are in , feet and inches only. But to keep everyone sane it was agreed long before any of us were around to call it as close to the average as workable and a nautical mile is 6080 feet. If you want to go into kilometres will have to get a set of conversion tables. Ivan is correct the word knot is as stated in its term as stated. JS however a reef knot is also as stated. Why ? I have found in my many walks of life and dealing with Shipping Managers world wide, never mind those who have never held a responsible position, that once they know the sharp end from the blunt end they become experts in the field, this not only applies to shipping. One is never too old to learn and be able to accept corrected misinformation no matter how contrary it is to long held beliefs which were previously held as gospel and no doubt in good faith. None of us are infallible.

As a recently new member I have been amazed at the genuine desire to help amongst this special bunch.
In a very short time they offered me an answer to my long-standing need to know about my father’s last moments at sea more than 70 years ago.

I am now saddened by an apparent crisis of respect.. I am surprised because I always believed that in spite of differences shipmates always rallied around a mate in need.
Hugh believes he was wronged and one would expect he would be heard and the wrong corrected not out of right or wrong but out of compassion, respect and camaraderie.

As a newbie I am reluctant to offer advice but i feel compelled to try and help heal the situation because I am the recipient of the group’s generous help.
I believe that the party/parties who may have unintentionally offended Hugh and/or others should make amends to restore the peaceful enjoyment of this very special community.

The thread you started on this forum about your father's service has been spoilt somewhat and that was certainly not my intention and I am sorry for that. I only hope you got some of the answers you were looking for.

I am happy to continue helping on the forum as long as everyone can comment freely within the rules and enjoy the site for what it is. I am not offended in anyway but I won't give my time, which also benefits this forum, for my content [which nobody can suggest broke any rules] to be censored as if I didn't write it. With hindsight, I should perhaps have just answered the question but other questions were also being discussed [about speed, distance, time] again, all relevant to your original question. Members have a right to comment if they wish on all aspects of another members reply. Other people's inputs can actually help others to understand, not everyone is a seafarer on here. So side discussions do go on and they should be tolerated unless way off topic. A discussion about the speed in knots is not off topic and it should not have been shut down in the manner that it was. Anyway, enjoy it here it is a good forum most of the time.

Think you may be jumping the Gun here as i will always put a reason when i edit anything!

As for leaving the site, well as before as you did it is entirely up to you , as it is for all others.
I am not saying that i wish you or anyone to leave but if the site does not meet your or again others Criteria then as we have said in the past many times, please feel free to find a site that suits you.

There seems in the recent time to be too many questions and Nit Picking going on with a few here!

Here once again you step in and air your Opinions as to what could happen! This kind of posting is NOT required as there has been no mention of Banning anyone ! I notice in another Thread and your reply saying that to go off Topic is good , and adds to the interest of the Thread!
To go off Topic has long been the thing that not only i have tried so hard to STOP, but does seem that it is a loosing battle .
I would ask that this sort of Posting be Stopped as well, and again i say if the Rules do not suite anyone, then its time to think of seeking a site that does alow one to do as he/she pleases!
