Well if i am correct lets take the Ship Largs Bay, that used to go at approx. 15 Knots So as an example lets say she does 585 Nautical Miles in 1 Day 10 hrs plus Minus! Thats 34 hrs . So if its say plus minus 3 days we can assume approx. 585 + 585 + 480 = 1650 Nautical Miles so would have been past Aden then as the Distance from Port Said to Aden is 1517 Nautical Miles!

NB Now of course depending if the Ship kept that same Speed this would be quite spot on, but could possibly have been a bit close towards Port Said if the Ship went a bit slower on occasions !??
So at a guess would say he Died at Sea possibly in the Gulf of Aden then ? This would be just as one enters the Gulf! from the Red Sea.

Any log books deck, Engine, and official will have an E.P. Of where the ship stopped for any burial at sea. All stoppages to a merchant vessel is usually in any charter party.JS

There is really only one way to do this given what we know. We can guess what speed and route the ship took and given departure dates and notifications by the shipping company we could make a reasonable guess at its position at the time but there are too many variables to be accurate. The one piece of information we do have is the position the ship was in at the time his death was reported. That is all you need. 16Deg32N - 41Deg06E. Just take the latitude of Port Suez and 16 degrees 32 ‘ get the difference in minutes and that is your distance near enough for what you want in nautical miles . Aden is 12 47n
44 59 e , approx 225 nm north of 16 32 n jS ps take off a 100 miles for the canal. JS

Good one Hugh so that Puts her a bit of a way from where i worked out, but as said depending on her actual constant speed etc, could have been before my Point or past my point.
So according to the Co Ordinates you give with that Search she should have been about where the Red Icon Shows on the Map.

Knots is a distance covered in one hour. There is no need to add per hour after Knots, as knots is per hour.

Well, Vernon, they are not my coordinates, but that of the ship's navigator/(OOW) who would enter regular positions in the Bridge Log. So yes, the red icon was the ship's position as recorded at the time of the death of Joseph Zard. It would have been a requirement for his death to be noted in the Ship's Official Logbook with the Master's signature and that of another officer such as the Mate. As the ship was at sea at the time of his death, the position of the ship would be taken from the Bridge Log or a new position requested [the last part is my assumption but there are plenty of ex-deck officers on this site who I am sure will correct me if I am wrong]. *just noted John S. #14 - Thanks John* The important bit is that the ship's position was recorded and that is why you can see it in the primary records i.e. the Deaths at Sea Register -it will have been taken from the Ships Official Logbook. I would also expect the time of death to be recorded in the Official Logbook too. I hope that helps.
