looking for advice and help
Hello I have my grandad Seamans card book thing and would welcome any help to find his records etc , marine engineer class 3 ,his numbers on the front and his discharge number is inside ? This I don't understand he went to sea until his last couple of years when he died ,so what numbers are useful ? Thank you .

His discharge book number, Would be a start if Merchant Navy it will begin with an R, then any ships and dates he was aboard them, And of course his rating at sea would help Regards Terry.

The Class 3 marine engineer, sounds like the new cert. structure which came out somewhere around the eighties. To my knowledge the only Marine Engineers certs were Class 1 and 2 steam and motor and Extra Class 1. An engineer would be more qualified to tell you about the cert. structure and when 3s and 4s and suchlike came into force. Cheers John S
