The hero
THE HERO
My father was a hero,
Well, perhaps to only me.
He left his home and loved ones dear,
He stood for liberty.
He sailed aboard a merchant ship,
In the hostile times of war.
He fought the unseen submarine,
As his shipmates did before.
All around him raged the battle,
And explosions lit the sky.
Tankers burned from stem to stern,
Some men live while others die.
My father's luck held out that day,
He came home from the war.
He served among the heroes proved,
To even up the score,
My father was a hero,
For sure he was to me.
He heard the call and stood up tall,
In keeping free men free.
Ian Adrian Millar
With the approach of Remembrance Day this poem is written in memory of those who left all that was dear to them to sail and serve in the merchant ships in time of conflict. To those who served and who largely were forgotten when the war ended. Forgotten by the country they served and the people they kept alive. Warmly remembered by loved ones ever proud of their service.

Re: The hero
Remembrance Day is special but when you stop and think about it every day is special for us thanks to those who came before us and served often giving that full measure, the very least we can do is remember them.

Re: The hero
Thanks again Ian.
Totally agree with your thoughts.
We need to remember all of them.
