Default Poem Written About Me by Friend

Friend of mine Lisa messaged out of the blue and said she had written a poem about me last night. Lost for words at the time, and quite touched to be fair, but she got it spot on, so thought I would share.

As a young man I had to escape,
the life that I had was just such a waste.
So I had an idea, yes I had a plan,
so I joined the Merchant Navy, it made me a man.

It changed my life, the way that I think,
also introduced me to the women and the drink.
I can honestly say with love, not regret,
the time of my life I will never forget.

The average person just can’t understand,
the friendships the Brothers, those days were just grand.
The places I seen the time I was there,
to feel so free without a care.

To stand on that deck and see nothing but sea,
I found myself.... yes that was once me.
The times weren’t all easy, at times it was hard.
Can’t tell you how many pubs I’ve been barred.

Wish I’d have known then what I know now,
and I’d have cherished the moments of looking down at the bow.
But the memories I have will last till the end,
on this I can defiantly depend.

I miss it so much, the world I did roam,
it’s like no fixed abode, but the ship was my home.
And when it was over and I had to go,
I didn’t realise that civvy life was so slow.
I will be a sailor until my last breath,
and maybe travel the seas, if not in life in my death x

#1. Very true and says it all in a few words. To most seafarers who spent their lives in that profession, all their memories apart from those of a pre life of childhood are given to the sea. It was loved and hated at times , the hated part was always forgiven but should never be forgotten , love and hate are the two biggest emotions in a persons life , and if you can find it in your heart to forget the hatred , then you are lucky and have had the privilege of finding your true vocation in the short life we all have. When you live with Nature in its own environment it will always bring out the best and worse in the human mind. JS

Short time or long time in my opinion it makes no difference.
Once you have been to sea it changes you like no other industry can.
As often said before, and this is shown in the poem, we left home as boys but came back as men.
