Re: Cammell Lairds Ship Builders
Good to see Lairds taking on apprentices and hopefully the yard can get back to being a competitive business again.
Lessons they seriously need to take onboard are keeping to the budget and keeping to delivery times get that right and the business will grow.

Re: Cammell Lairds Ship Builders
Good to see that apprentices are being brought back into the shipyards again. I worked in the offshore construction yards on the Tyne for 26 years before retiring , the average age of the workforce was reckoned to be 58, in that time I think I saw less than 30 taken on as apprentice.
Out of those only 2 were in my trade of rigging. Hopefully more to come in the future.

Re: Cammell Lairds Ship Builders
#5 Cappy, hopefully there will, unfortunately the work was not always there. A couple of times I was the only rigger in the yard between jobs coming in.
The workforce would go from hundreds to tens in a few weeks, one of the 2 apprentice riggers I know is no longer in the game as he was looking for more stable employment, which was a shame as he was a good lad, quick to learn.
Hope for the future for these youngsters.
Regards Michael
