Reason for the influx of Irish migrants to the Liverpool area was the Famine 1845 to 1852. These days you take your life in your hands to even cross Scottie Rd it certainly is a black spot for accidents.
Town planners certainly did not cover themselves in glory in what they did to the area, but people were living in really poor quality homes, outside toilets damp and cold. They needed to go. One has to wonder why they did not develope the area street by street and replace with decent quality housing. A lot of the so called improvement housing in Liverpool with tower blocks. Thankfully a lot of these have now gone as well.
