Charlie Ross, Bosun on the Baxtergate
Hi All
My Grandfather was called Charlie Ross. He was originally from Singapore but Lived in Liverpool.
I know he was a Bosun on a ship called the Baxtergate. He was born around 1900 but I don't know what years he served in the Merchant Navy.
I am trying to find any info about him. I have no idea how to use the National Archives and end up going around in circles.
Any help would be appreciated .
Thanks

Hello Mike,
Unfortunately if you can not visit Kew in person it has now become quite expensive to obtain service records from The National Archives. To undertake a search will now cost you £45.00 for a service file, known as a CRS-10. As you don't have a date of birth or Discharge Book No. to narrow the search down, I can guarantee you will be charged the £45.00 for the search.
I did a check for any primary records on him, which would of given us a Discharge Book No. to go on. No luck I'm afraid. You would also need to know when he left the Merchant Navy as records are held in separate registers known as the Fourth (1913-1940) & Fifth (1941-1972) register.
The Baxtergate belonged to the Turnbull Scott Shipping Co. and again there were more than one ship named Baxtergate owned by the Co. over several years.

As Billy said there were two vessels named BAXTERGATE who could fit the bill. Crew agreements are available for both but the cost of a search would be prohibitive not least because some of them are stored in Newfoundland.
If you cannot be more specific with dates etc. then all I can suggest is that you try and see if he has any records in the Fourth Register Central Index. Cost you £15 up front. Bear in mind some of these cards have been destroyed or lost.

If there is nothing there, then the next course would be to seek his CRS10 and maybe the crew agreements which are at Kew.
Of course you could visit Kew and Southampton or even Newfoundland yourself. Only you know how much you can afford to spend on this project.

Thanks to everyone who has replied to this post so far.
I have very little info about my Grandfather.
I know thet he died in 1986. I will pester my family to see if I can get a precise date of birth for him, as well as details about when he joined and left the MN.
I've only been told that he was a bosun on the Baxtergate, and know nothing about when this was or any other ship he may have served on.
I'll do more homework.
I'll get back with more details.
Thanks

Ray,
I have done a little digging and am 99% that Charley Ross is the man we are looking for.
I think the man on CWGC is a different person but as ever I could be wrong.
Let's see what the original poster comes up with.
regards
Roger

A cargo ship. Per 1 (data), 2 (Turnbull Scott history lower on page), 3 ('convoyweb.org', WW2 convoy duty, Baxtergate, am unable to check the link), 4 (1951 collision with Steel Flyer), 5 (image, Anglo Indian, also -01, -02), 6 (image, Baxtergate, I think, also -03), 7 (Miramar, link, you now must be registered to access). 426 ft. (about 135 metres) long, speed of 11 knots. Built for 'Nitrate Producers' Steamship Co., Ltd.', (Anglo Line), Lawther, Latta & Co. Ltd. of London, the managers. Visited Auckland, New Zealand, a couple of times. In 1937, sold to Turnbull Scott & Co., of London, for £50,000, & renamed Baxtergate. 'She was kept on the Pacific phosphate and nitrate trading of her previous owner.' 111 WW2 convoy references, including at least 9 voyages across the N. Atlantic, service in the Mediterranean, to W. Africa (Freetown, Takoradi) & to South Africa & lots of local U.K. voyages. Many independent voyages also. With varied cargoes such as wheat, phosphates, lumber & steel. In 1947, sold to 'Panamanian Tramp Shipping Co.', (Stathatos & Co., of London, the managers), & renamed Artygia. In 1948, sold to 'Compania de Navegacion Cebaco, S.A.', of Panama, with C. Michalos & Co. the managers, & renamed Domina. On Mar. 28, 1951, while en route to Baltimore with a cargo of iron ore, vessel collided with Steel Flyer in Chesapeake Bay. Vessels were on crossing courses. Steel Flyer was guilty of gross negligence but Domina was negligent also. Did not spot the extent to which either ship was damaged. There may be later WWW court data that I have not read. In 1955, was sold or transferred to Michalos Bros, of Piraeus, Greece, & renamed Lily Michalos. On Aug. 21, 1959, arrived at Hong Kong to be broken up. Miramar refers to the vessel being 'corrugated'.
