Harry Payne was on ss Baltic when it rescued the passengers and crew of the RMS Republic in 1909, and on RMS Carmania when it went to the aid of ss Volturno, a chemicals carrier, in 1913.

The complete collection of medals is estimated to fetch up to £3,000 at auction in Colchester.

There's a family link for me. My great grandfather George Unwin was on the Republic on that trip and was also awarded the CQD medal.

The CQD medals come up at auction every so often and I'm always tempted to buy one -- but then I think that it would lie in a drawer for years, and it wouldn't be *his* medal, which has passed down another side of the family.
