Trying to find more information regarding husband’s grandad
Hi, I am trying to find some information for my husband regarding his grandad. We believe he was in the merchant navy but the only piece of information I have to hand is a photograph of his Seaman’s Record Book and Certificates of Discharge which has a number beginning with R and another beginning with MMD as well as a BSIC serial number. This document is dated from 1952. Where would I go about finding more information (if this is even possible) on where he served etc? Any advice is welcome. I’m happy to provide the actual numbers above if anyone would be able to help out. Thanks in advance

Hello Emily, Welcome to the site
The link below will help you it's free to join or you can share his name, place and date of birth along with the R prefix No and we can help you.
Merchant Navy seamen and officers 1913-1972 (nationalarchives.gov.uk)
This is a search in record series BT 382, BT 372, BT 390, BT 391 and BT 364, a set of records known as the Fifth Register of Seamen, also referred to as the Central Register of Seamen. The register consists of docket books and seamen’s pouches
If you have any of his Ships numbers then enter them using this link and it should provide the Ships names. Any problems just ask.
