Tyred Again
Well for all those lucky people who have purchased an electric car, a new tax may be on the way, the 'tyre tax' The Govt is undertaking a study (well under way) that shows electric cars cause tyre partical pollution because they are heavier than fossil fuel cars and that like fossil fuel cars will have to pay emission charges when entering certain cities, which are growing in number. The Govt has realised that its coffers will become depleted when more and more electric vehicles take to the roads which are not subject to current emission charges and fossil fueled vehicles which are charged gradually disappear from the roads.
Ain't life wonderful!

Re: Tyred Again
That will be on top of the tax for the tire in the first place, bit like petrol, VAT and tax, i think, the motorist is a gift when it comes to tax.Maybe one day they will weigh us all, and charge for rubber particulates from our shoes !!!.

Re: Tyred Again
Why not put on a general steering wheel tax and be done with it, at least one would be able to strangle the wheel while driving.

Re: Tyred Again
Well behind the times it appears.
Here in Victoria there has been a 2.5 cents per klm tax on EV since last year.
Special tires are now being manufactured for EV due to increase in weight.
But unlike UK our tax on fuel is set at a fixed rate per liter, 42 cents, then GST (VAT) added to that.

Re: Tyred Again
Fuel duty tax in the UK is or was 54%(Chancellor may have lowered it because of the cost of living crisis) and VAT 20%. There is talk of fuel duty tax being increased in the Spring budget. Everytime the price increases at the pump the UK exchequer makes more revenue on the VAT. Some are aruging that fuel costs are now dropping and so is the amount HMG makes as the VAT returns will be less. What some do not realise is that Fuel is still about 40 pence a litre dearer now than it was before the covid pandemic.
To be fair these increases were not by government but greedy oil companies who continue to make mega profits.

Re: Tyred Again
One of the reasons for such high prices, apart from profits made by companies such as BP, is the retailers margin.
We have one retailer here, Liberty, selling fuel as much as 30 cents cheaper than Shell.
They rely on volume sales and the servos are very plain.
But some such as Shell are adding up to 35 cents per liter in retailers margin.
