MN Uniform
Evening all,
I'm just having a poke around the internet and can't to seem any physical evidence of the much vaunted uniform charter for the MN. I'm currently in company rags rather than "true" MN uniform and as I will be working closely with the RFA/RN going forward i'd rather have a reference for some of the more formal dress scales for mess wearing etc... so as not to look a slop. If it were east of india, i'd just default to red sea rig as that is fairly easy to put together, but I can't work out the full kit with an "official" seal of approval per se.
As far as I can make out RN style mess rig with the buttons and braid MN appropriate would be fine? as well as a suitable cummerbund and neckwear of course.
any help much appreciated.
Aye,
GeorgeT

Re: MN Uniform
#1. George any naval outfitter will fit you out as per BOT one might say. I had Occassion in 1991 to be presented to the Queen at Buck House . Before being presented and accepting the invite you are issued with a list of suitable wearing apparel . In my case it was morning formal dress or uniform . Being frugal and knowing the chances of ever prancing around again in a very formal suit were slight whereas the uniform who knows. So I chose the uniform and the expenses allowed for the visit covered it , and was MN down to the shoes and proper MN badge and not a Bombay Basher. The uniform itself is modelled on the RN one with its own MN buttons and braid . Someone will know where it is on site , if not just google it. I dont think RFA wear the mn uniform but maybe wrong , thought they too had their own regalia. Would advice against doeskin if on a working ship as collects all the dust and wet paint in my case was red lead and the reason why had to invest in a new one which just hangs in the wardrobe today as a souvenir . Barathea or some more modern material is more practical if you have to prance around like a stuffed dummy. Cheers all the best . JS
On a RN charter once all the senior officers on ship were invited to the officers mess in Portsmouth . The normal dress on the ship I was on was Wooly pulley and black trousers , however in this case we were asked to wear epaulettes which we all had except the ch.eng. Who was only relieving . We found a set of British Airways pilots ones and he wore those , don’t think anyone noticed . JS
