SS Richard Montgomery
A letter was sent to Sheerness Council in 1962 from the Office of the Commander of US Naval Forces in Europe, signed by Lieutenant JS Cohune in which he states " Th SS Richard Montgomery ran aground at the Thames Anchorage, with only her masts and superstructure visible. She was sold to Philip's Craft and Fisher Company, who raised her and sold her for scrap".
Apparently, the Captain was unhappy with his allotted anchorage place and went ashore seeking advice and was advised that it was not the best place to Anchor. In the meantime the storm blew up and the rest is history as they say.
With the Captain ashore, the First Officer was in charge, asked at the original enquiry why he didn't call the Captain, he gave some obscure excuse, now we now why.
The above info is from an article in todays Daily Express.

Re: SS Richard Montgomery
What always amazed me was they went and built a huge Oil Refinery a couple of miles from the Richard M.

Re: SS Richard Montgomery
Well, bits of her are to be "raised" masts being cut off to help stop the vessel breaking up further from wave damage.
