Pyjamas
Last night watching tv there was an advert for put down beds ( settee to bed function ) and showed an old guy in his underpants getting his head down. My wife came out with some derogatory remark about not wearing pyjamas. To which I replied without thinking , “ you know with 50 years at sea I can never remember wearing or packing pyjamas to wear on a ship. I have been wracking my brains since then trying to remember myself wearing such at sea and cannot remember. At home yes at sea no. So have come to the conclusion in my case at least , is another big chasm between a shore and seagoing worker. 2 different breeds of people’s. I”ll bet the pyjama wearers meticulously cleaned their teeth as well , no wonder there was always a water shortage. JS.

Re: Pyjamas
As a young lad of about ten, just a few years ago I has a job delivering papers.
Had to start at 0600hours which meant getting up about 45 minutes earlier, getting dressed and riding my bike down to the paper shop.
I got the wonderful idea that if I did not wear PJ I could have an extra minute in bed as there would be less clothes to remove,
Since then I have slept in my birthday suit and never thought any thing of it.
Cannot se the point in taking all your clothes off to go to bed then putting others on, makes no sense.

Happy daze John in Oz.

Re: Pyjamas
Hi John S
Never owned a pair of jams while I was at sea, just underpants on in the bunk.
Last Sunday had to go to hospital in in an ambulance in pyjamas, then I had to get a taxi home next day sitting in the front, just as well the Taxi driver knew me

#3 My proudest piece of apparel at the same age doing the same job , was a pair of army boots well dubbined and highly polished , and at 0600 hrs. Used to take great delight in clattering up people’s paths to their letterboxes . Used to whistle as well. Going to sea had to cut the whistling out, was a hard habit to drop. JS

john an old dear said if i whistled a happy song as i delivered her papers each morn she would give me sixpence when collecting the paper money on sunday morn.....she would often open the door in her old lace hat and pinny and give me a sweet ....my repetoir....was pedro the fisherman ....ive got sixpence .....and her favourite there is a greenhill far away etc.....on cold winter morns in bamburgh ave on the cliff tops it was often a bloody fast whistle but fine summer mornings a much easier rendition... then home put my feet in the oven to warm them ....and a two and a half mile run up the coast road up marsden bank ...then downhill to redwell school ...fit as a lop man fit as a lop.....cappy R683532

Re: Pyjamas
Never wore pyjamas at sea, when you had to do your dhoti in a galvanised bucket would have meant extra work, still don't wear pyjamas today.kt

Re: Pyjamas
Today being the first Thursday of the month and the night of the Happy hour and the meeting of the ancient mariners ,I brought this same subject up , the members present were mostly ex RN but all were of the same mind and pyjamas were out of fashion in our time at sea. Just a chance remark brought this subject up , but it brought back memories of being not able to enjoy , if that is the word of a civilised and easy life style. I also won $50 dollars on a $2 dollar raffle ticket so was a freeby night. So just maybe tonight will sleep over the 2 hour limit .Cheers JS
