    Default Dart America

Quite a few people sailed on Dart America on this forum.

1973 my dad’s last year he sailed on the ship.

Wonder if anybody remembers any stories on it?
    Thank you

I sailed as mate on the C.P. Ambassador ( later renamed Canmar Ambassador), she was built as the Dart Atlantic.
Accommodation was very good with excellent bar and dining saloon, big crew lounge and games/movie room.
The enclosed bridge was a Bristol city line idea. The anchors could be lowered, let go and raised from the bridge.
Here is the history of Dart Line.
    https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dart_Container_Line
Strangely enough C.P. kept the Dart line name when they brought out seapac containers and renamed the ships Dart Americana etc. They ran east coast of USA to Carribbean service.
I recall seeing the Dart America in Halifax when we called there on a fully laden cape sized bulk carrier for bunkers after loading iron ore in seven islands for discharge in Japan. Upon departure from Halifax we found our anchor fouled with old anchor cables and submerged power cables and whilst manouevering to attempt to dislodge them got close enough to the Dart ship we were in danger of colliding with it. Eventually had to reanchor using the other anchor whilst a work boat came with cutting gear the release the cables wrapped around our anchor. We were assured that the power cable was no longer in use but when they cut through it as it was the last thing to clear the fouled anchor, a whole section of the town on the opposite side of the harbour to the port suddenly went dark.
Sneaked out before anyone could blame us for the power cut.
Middle of winter loading and bunkering, freezing cold and snowing, was glad to clear Canada and get into warmer climes
