    Default Bank holiday pay

I need a memory jog, Why is it that the only holidays I remember being recognised while at sea, were Christmas and New Year? Were all other bank holidays ignored, or were we paid extra for working for them??? Cheers, Albi.

    Hi Albi
As far as i can recall,we only ever got paid for Holidays that were so to speak of recognised, such as you mention,Christmas and New Year,i also think that we were paid extra for some religious Holidays (Good Friday being one!) as far as Bank Holidays are concerned well they were not recognised at all,and i think that was fair enough,as at Sea there was a different ruling as to those sort of things!
This is talking about the 1950's

Dont forget about Sundays ar Sea too!!

Remember at Sea they had their own jurisdiction!
    Cheers

PS I think if a few look at their old Payslips they may show some of the days paid as Holidays!

    Just added!

Seems like later in the 1960 to 65 and later there was pay for the following !

MSS.292B/113.33/4 Holidays with pay. Bank holidays, special public holidays: 1960-5

Corres. re dates of holidays and holiday pay.

MSS.292B/113.33/5 Holidays with pay. Bank holidays, special public holidays: 1970

    As above.

    Question Pay the rates'

Hi Albi, Hi Dr Vernon, Hi shipmates, cant' remember much about the pay? but did we Have L.O.S. allso called Loss of Doss? I remember overtime for sundays, and on a coaster we had the same time off i.e bank hols as the dockers in some ports no one would work the ship? I was in france and the dockers would not work the cargoe (Grain} for some reason Bagging {Not enough money}? so myself and a shipmate from swansea Robbo was his name, did the work and had they pay!!! very nice pick up tax free {Big pile of paper each} that payed all the bills But they would not take it in my bank then? Had to give I.D. and tell them where I got it from {Large amount in them days} Banks were fussy in them days not like today but Never had any payment from the british docks the unions were too clever and our dockers were hard workers? except when they were on strike.
