Atlantic Containe Line.
It was mentioned last week regarding the increase in British tonnage and that it was good news for British seamen.I mentioned ACL and their new ships being christened here registered here and flying the red ensign.I asked the manager of the mission today how many British seamen were aboard these ships,his answer not one.Mainly Croatian officers and Filipino crew.

Jim, sounds very similar to the crew on Cruise ships. All fly the Red Duster but very few crew are from UK.
Mainly entertainment, the rest from where ever.

You can go back to peoples memories on here to trace the connivance that went on and how the legislation was changed. this could only have happened in Parliament. When most on here first went to sea under the Red Ensign, British nationality had to be at least the Master and Chief Engineer plus a percentage of the crew. British certification was only recognised. Since then laws have been changed, certification has been brought down to the lowest common denominator so as to encompass the lower paid categories in the world. Standards have generally dropped to what they used to be. Cooks and catering staffs required on ships years ago have gone. The excuses are all against seamen and how hard to find and employ. Its been a master plan carried out with all different countries compliances and agreement to employ the cheapest and easily obtainable world wide work forces, there should be no disillusionment here. The British Merchant Service will never attain its former prominence. None of us when first went to sea foresaw British shipping hit rock bottom the way it has. The only ones who did are those who planned it. They may live yet to regret it. Although most of them are now dead. JWS

A friend of mine a few years ago was Master of a Anchor Handling vessel in Singapore, The Agent came to see him and said , "I have a new crew for you, Guess where from,? they are the cheapest I could find, " he said Filipinos , NO, Korea , NO , Bangladesh , NO,
Give up,
he said "Nepal, in the Himalayas,",
The new crew joined and a passing vessel made the ship rock a little, and they all fell down onto the deck screaming, they all thought it was an Earthquake.
They had Never seen the sea or a ship before.
He had to take the vessel across to the Cape and on to Angola , and he said it was a terrible voyage, He resigned when he got there and never went back to sea again.

Ian Higby the managing director of the container line, great he is singing the praises of Liverpool and its maritime heritage etc, how much louder we could all sing if he could put a scouse crew on her as well, or at least a large percentage, kt

Latest figure was just over 16,000 British registered seamen/seapersons
