Ivan, Knowone seen the enormity of the problems that lay ahead for the amount of people having no choice but to use food banks. Of course there will be people abuse the system that happens in every walk of life. Since this government came to power food prices have increased 45% petrol at the pumps up in price, Fuel to heat your home up in price, V A T Increased, Do the comparisons yourself, Then put yourself on a 1% pay rise for the next 4 years. Or worse check what people and our youngsters coming out of education are earning on zero hour contracts. The church has stayed out of this up until now because the forecast from George Osborne for the next term in office if they get it is more austerity. Very tough decisions to be made, Possibly a 1.000000 jobs to go in the private sector. Most of these jobs that have been created is a load of codswallop, It is people taking up self employment nothing wrong with that. But yesterday's announcement by the bank of England that interest rates are likely to be increased at the start of the year does not sit good with any new business. The thing is my friend I don't have to worry about anything my bills will be paid I will eat well 3 times a day there are no wolves at my door I have never or would know how to apply for a loan from Wonga.com. But as I have always said I am a great believer in spreading the wealth of this country. Because we are a very wealthy nation you can't deny it. The problem is rather than knock the church for the enormous wealth they have. Lets see a government manage the books a bit better which is what they are elected and paid to do by me and you, And if anyone slips through the net Or falls on hard times Use the resources put aside to help them. That is the job of government it works the whole world over, Why not here Regards Terry. Not sure how Scotland's Navy morphed into starving families- however, these food banks are fairly well regulated. To qualify for any handouts an applicant is either given documentation from the local 'house of plenty'( the dss as was) or a note from your doctor. Without this the distributors of this bounty won't part with any food. I'm sure there are scallies about who will find a way round all this, and considering that most of the people who manage these centres are usually volunteers who might fall for the odd sob story,but by and large it is working and whatever we might think about the need for them ( never in my day!-no money, never went without our bowl of thin gruel!), they fill a need of sorts. I think we all realise there is something dreadfully wrong politically that would allow this to occur at certain levels of society, coupled with the daily images in the media of thousands of edible foodstuffs being pulped rather than distributed to the needy. Sell by, use by dates? what's all that about? Only a ploy by the manufacturers to get us to bin food and buy some more! There's stuff in my fridge beginning to fur up,(well, it is cold in there) scrape it off and it's as good as new.

Regarding hard times I have been there and most have been there, I never ever got any charity nor expected any charity, My parents never ever got any at all and they were Real Hard Times. I was brought up in the 30s and remember the hard times when Dad was out of work due to the slump. I have scrambled on the tips to find clinker to burn on the fire. and all the rest , No Benefits, No food banks, no charity. we survived. People today are too bleddy soft. they get benefits, Tax Free, They get more than me on a pension but I have to pay tax on a MN pension I bought and paid for with my own money, even my State Pension is taxed, So by the time they take tax off me, I have to pay £1,250 in Council Tax, my mate , ex MN, in same situation but on benefits laughs at me, for being daft enough to buy a MN pension. I am worse off than my mate who never bought a pension and he gets every benefit going . TAX FREE.
He has also last year got a brand New Bungalow on the Council, Rent Free and Council Tax free. and more money per week than I get after paying my taxes. He has a Safe in the loft to keep his money in, so nothing in the bank.
So if you want a fair society how about campaigning for the people who pay for the benefit people. us the bleddy tax payers.

Food banks are not restricted to the UK. The wealthiest country in Europe, Germany has them.

In my avenue of 16 houses, only four are working, the 12 other families are on benefits, all have big 4x4s or prestige cars, "hay you" next door here for 8 years from the colonies, never ever worked has a new Mercedes on Benefits and a Toyota, "This truly paradise for me and family" , he says I walk down my avenue and see through the windows, they all have 50 inch TV`s, and satellite dishes on their houses. non of them pay council tax.
Non of all their kids are hungry. I see no poverty amongst the unemployed here . they all live the good life, far better than I can afford, and I pay Tax to keep them in the luxury they have become accustomed to. and you want me to feel sorry for them

well sorry shipmates but nobody will ever convince me that children in this country are starving ...unless it is due to there parents not being capable of management of finances .....as for the doctors note john to get the foodbank.......we all no about doctors notes.....but such is life as i stated before lets open a free money bank .....then you wont want a foodbank .....folks can get there own money free and spend it like theywant.......and does anyone believe there would still be kids NOT going hungary the alkies woukd still spend all on drink ...the junkies would all kill them selves with dope......there would be plenty of jobs then because nobody would go to work anymore ......ah utopia for all .......no cloud cuckoo land.....well not in my world regards cappy

Terry we are never going to agree on this, so I am calling it a day. A lot depends on what you mean by guys on this site never been hungry in their lives(an uncalled for statement) , just because I don't agree with your support for the poor people on hard times, incidentally on which I do agree for 'genuine' poor people, but not the thousands of blodgers. I was born before the war, brought during the war, bombed out three times, evacuated from one end of the country to the other and back again a couple of times, survived somehow even though ration books were lost in the bombings and couldn't get our rations, I remember being hungry on many an occasion, walking to school, miles not yards, with newspaper stuck in the soles of my shoes to keep from walking on the road, newspapers under the vest to keep warm, starting work at 13 on deep sea trawlers to supplement what little income coming in, (dad in hospital for ten months with 22 broken bones), buying rag jumpers so me and my sister could unravel them so mum could knit some for us, and there's more, one thing I don't need is lectures on a hard life and not having feelings. Every penny I spend, has been earned by me in sometimes hard and dangerous situations afloat and ashore, so forgive me if I do not shed crocodile tears for blodgers who are quite happy for me to support them from the taxes on my meagre State pension. All my other pensions were cashed in to educate my children through university when I fell on hard times at another period in my life, never ever had a penny from the State for anything, so again forgive my lack of empathy with your cause, but don't lecture me on hard times.

There is conflicting stories regarding the UK.
1) We are told that food banks are struggling to cope with the demand and that poverty is rife.
2) Obesity is on the rise, and fast food takeaways are being banned from setting up near schools.
We are informed kids are fatter than those of yesteryear.
So which one is it?
I don't know.

A lot is being made here of hungry children when in fact if 500.000 vouchers are issued only a third of that figure is attributed to children.60% of people using the food banks are doing so because of delays in payment from the DWP.
