Theres stores out here called spud shed more like a supermarket garden centre where all fruit and vegetables are sold. The bloke who runs now has about 4 in the Perth area. A few years ago he had a glut of potatoes and decided to give them away. Stopped by the State government probably by the other retailers as well as against the interests of their own businesses. Think he was fined also after being stopped. The butter mountain probably had similar restrictions when a lot of it was destroyed. Business before benevolence obviously JS

Quite a lot of the butter was sold to Russia at a knock down price before they could sell it to EU citizens.I recall pensioners one year getting a free pound of butter I think it was.What did we also have a wine lake which had togo down the drain,I remember seeing tons of tomato's being plowed into the ground.

1, Brian you would have to rephrase your Q, What did I do when I first met a hungry child I don't know what you mean soz. Unless you refer to do I contribute to food banks yes I do the food bank we give to is run by a Methodist church run by an ex Merchant Seaman and very good friend. Have I seen a hungry day, ??? What do you think I have worked since I was 13years old delivering groceries I would give my Mother 3 shilling and save the other 2 shilling in a china cup in her cabinet which would most of the time disappear before I could spend it she had 7 hungry mouths to feed.

I don't preach to anyone on this site I post my own opinions just like the rest if others don't agree then bring on free speech and I don't patronise anyone so why you took the statement of not seeing a hungry day personal I don't understand if it was meant directly to you I would have said so. We have an advert on tv asking for donations for India. Tne advert shows a kid of about 12 or 13 sitting at a sewing machine at home, saying since his father died he has had to earn money to help his family. Bully for him, this is the bleeding hearts again, why shouldn't he work at that age, most British kids from that end of society worked well before this age, we are now in the process where the roles between the likes of India re the general population is going to reversed with that of the UK. India has plenty of millionaires of their own who have apparently no regard for their own people, why should we. I wouldn't give a tosser to overseas charities which only a small percentage is going to get there in any case, if any that is. Charity begins at home and always will as far as I am concerned. JS

ll Roger if what has happened here in our state erection we are all doomed. Not one but two Greens have gained seats in the lower house and three in the upper, but here's the rub. The lower house seats were won with only 18% of the primary vote. The Liberal candidates got around 45% of the primary but the Greens got in on preferences.
Unless they change the way we vote we will all end up living under a coconut tree weaving grass skirts.

John, old mate, and members, I'm fully aware of the parlous state in which the Australian Government finds itself and of the reasons for such dilemma. The folly that is 'preferential voting', has allowed a very small group of independents to hold the balance of power. Significantly, this group includes Mr.Ricky Muir (Motoring Enthusiasts Party) who at the last election polled 0.51 per cent of the primary vote (yes, you read that correctly). As a Senator, his solitary achievement thus far has been an ability to outrun the media. If asked a direct question he adopts a vacuous countenance and prefers to remain silent, which in Ricky's case may not be such a bad thing. Far better to be thought a fool, than to open one's mouth and remove all doubt. Then we have Jacqui Lambie who found her way into the Senate on the back of a stunning 6.58 per cent of the primary vote. Having found herself with sufficient power to inflict irreparable harm upon the Australian public, this woman, with her rough-as-guts vocal delivery and lack of common sense, has made a mockery of the Australian Senate. (The lads in Britain might be surprised to learn that shortly after becoming a Senator, whilst being interviewed on air, Ms Lambie indicated her preference for men with large sexual appendages....I kid you not, she's all class this woman !!! I wouldn't mind quite so much if she was a 'good sort' (as we say in Oz), but frankly that she ain't.. These two are among a ratbag few who, at the present time, wield enough power to bring this country to it's knees. Unless a double-dissolution is called for, this pair of idiots will remain in the Senate for almost six more years. It is a seriously frightening prospect, but it does serve to illustrate the lunacy of the current 'preferential' voting system in this country. Britain, believe me, you don't need it.

Not sure at what point the thread deviated on to the subject of starving kids etc, but i will stick my five eggs in anyway. I think one of the problems of not being able to produce a good meal from very little started way back, probably 20 years ago. My wife worked in the school here on the Island during that period, and was horrified when the domestic science classrooms were disbanded and turned into IT computer rooms, now she had been educated at the same school, also many years ago, and recalled, along with boys, having to bring certain ingredients into school, all very basic, and using their imagination, constructed a meal. All good lessons for life, also mothers used to teach cooking in the kitchen at home, i might add that both my sons can cook. Now move this some generations down the line, and those same children, now mothers, do not have the skills to pass on to their children, and no input from school education. Now to put the shoe on the other foot briefly, a lot of working mothers now have to put their income into the house, and so do not have that valuable ingredient of time on their hands, a lot of these are single parents, another by- product of our time . So i do agree with what our learned lady so and so said, that the ability to cook good cheap meals has been lost, but the addition of the word *poor* detracted from her argument.
Some years ago i used to indulge in rough shooting, so rabbit , pidgeon, and the like was often eaten at home, and i recall one of the guys at work asked if i could get him a rabbit, which i duly did, the rabbit had been paunched out at the shooting ground, but when i presented him with the rabbit still with its jacket on he was horrified, and would not take it home. These are country skills that have been lost. I know that there are deeper arguments as to prompt payment of benefit cheques, but as i have no knowledge of these i will refrain from comment. Keith I will follow on regarding your prompt payment of benefit cheque or none payment of benefit cheques would be more appropriate.Many people perceive people who attend food banks as the "something for nothing brigade" without realy knowing the history of each individual that is there for the food "hand out".Incidently people are allowed three voucher only,having said that many only use one to get them over the situation that they find themselves in.
Here is a little exercise I wont tell you the outcome but I would like anyone who has been interested in food banks and the people who attend them to tell me what they think the outcome would be.
This is my grandson,has attended college, class and benchwork and out on site from leaving school for two years.Got a great job and was turning to at 7am instead of 8am for an hours overtime,lived a distance from the factory so had to be up very early in the morning.Orders dried up so had to be laid off.Back to college further education in the contruction industry.100% attendance 100% punctuality and 100% or near enough marks for subjects taken.What work experience does he need,he already has it.So attends the Job Centre from college and is told that he must go and work in a YMCA Charity shop for a month for work experience,dont forget its for your benefit only.The week he had to go there he had applied for jobs,he had two interviews to attend on the Monday and a further one on the Wednesday.The question is, if this was you would you go for the interviews or would you go and work in the YMCA Charity shop?If you did attend the interviews didn't get the jobs what would you expect the next time that you attended the job centre.

jim i read what you say with sadness......i know that my grandchildren are the most precious joys in my life and to think they are having a hard time really upsets me.....my children are now on there way in life and must now stand on there own ....unless in desperate state ......the answer to your query i cannot answer and at the moment can only send commiserations to you and your family and specially to the young man himself but one thing stands out ....as long as he has grandies who care as you do he will .....never be hungry or without a roof over his head.....i remember last year you commented on his situation .....we can only hope for a better future for the lad with respect and good wishes cappy
