Margaret (Scotland) and I (England) and thus our children, grandchildren, and great grandchild have genes from both sides of Hadrian's Wall. This is really a time for well managed unity. We do not need a Republic of Australia and I can only hope that the Scottish voters consider carefully what they need to select and however comfortable it is to vote from heart and history, head and future may avoid enduring heartache.

Whilst glancing through the first post a few things spring to mind, this was obviously composed by the usual modern know it all mass produced by some of the well known Universitys degreed ex students of Social History. Ref. Keep you feet still Geordie, to me was always keep your feet still Geordie Hinny, Ref. to Royalty, always thought Cappy was related somewhere down the line, the saying we were taught by parents going back generations was when asked the question are you for George or the King by a Scotsman, if the reply was George then you were a Geordie. I would prefer if had the choice when studying the past to go by word of mouth passed down from family to family, and not nowadays stuff produced through a computer, the origins of which are to me not as accurate as could be in a lot of areas. Whilst modern day methods of teaching at school and university relies on all such information, when it comes to areas of the past, it is always going to be contaminated by someones personal views. I doubt very much in years to come for example a true perspective of the last two world wars will be too accurate, especially when political parties have an input to same. Cheers John S Ref Post 111

Before I start writing this post, let me emphasize I have no time for Mr Salmond or the SNP.
I'm proud to be Scottish and also proud to be British.
During WW1 Glasgow supplied enough able bodied men to form 26 battalions of the HLI, a higher proportion than in any other British city. Eleven thousand officers and men were killed in action. When war broke out, Scotland's population was a tenth of England's, yet Scottish regiments made up a seventh of Britain's army.
Within the Battlements of Edinburgh Castle stands Scotland's National War Memorial. During the First World War, 147,609 Scots lost their lives. The Memorial which is a shrine to sacrifice is visited by over a million people every year. Please remember the thousands of brave Scots who paid the ultimate price fighting for their country, "GREAT BRITAIN", and also think about people such as myself who don't want to see our great country ripped apart by a "brown bottom" named Salmond.

If it 'aint broke don't fix it comes to mind here.
If the yes vote gets up the financial businesses can if they wish make life very hard for Scotland, like all countries they are captive to the economic managers. If they are not happy then they can make life very hard for you.
There is strength in unity and I am not sure if such a small nation currently to some extent reliant on the rest of UK to survive will be able to do so on thier own.

Richard, when thye can find a better system that the Westminister system then, and only then would I consider a republic for Oz. Currently we are a republic in all but name.

It is because of what was so well written above that we on this side of the wall cannot understand why the likes of Salmond would want to follow a dream, and that's what it is, when so many of his countrymen sacrificed their lives to preserve a way of life that benefited all. That is why he has drafted in all the 16 year olds who may or may not have distorted views of history and may not be fully aware of the sacrifices made by their forbears, although having said that, I watched some Scottish youngsters being interviewed on TV last night and was heartened by the fact that some could see the error of Salmond's ways and could not understand his logic in these troubled times, so we live in hope, that shouting and blustering may not win the day.

It was paid for with Tax Payers money, and seeing that the majority of Tax Payers are in England due to a larger population then we should have it back to look after.

Ivan I watched the same programme. All of those kids were born well after Maggie Thatcher had left the political stage, yet a sizable crowd booed when her name was mentioned. Educated by the left wing doctrine and not the reality of what did occur.
