Tauranga Port, New Zealand
Interesting article about Maersk and the Port of Tauranga.
Port director says they will hover up the sand to deepen the channel but looking at the picture of the port methinks he may have forgotten to mention the fact that he has no container berth ad no container cranes.

Re: Tauranga Port, New Zealand
Tauranga has six or seven container cranes -- they are on the Mount Maunganui side of the harbour opposite Tauranga town. Big port for timber and dairy products. Regards Peter in NZ.

Brian
Sorry about the link.
Peter
The photo they used in LinkedIn showed a much different part of the port and I foolishly believed that they were showing the whole port.
Thanks for correcting and good luck to Tauranga, just hope Maersk do not screw them.

#4... Peter Chard... Have a friend in Tauranga, hope to be over and see him sometime in October. Clive Spencer sometimes writes articles for Sea Breezes, dont suppose you know him do you. See you were with China Steam Navigation, was that the old Butterfield and Swires group, if so also another long shot but did you know or hear of a Leo McGowan, started with them in 57 and probably remained there indefinetley, saw him once again in 62 when he was back in UK for his Masters, at that time had a house in Hong Kong and one in Sydney so assume he was on one of the passenger boats. Cheers John S

Re: Tauranga Port, New Zealand
John, Clive Spencer does not ring a bell with me but Leo McGowan does -- I think he sailed on the China Navigation passenger service between the OZ East coast and PNG. All the Swire Group records are available on the Internet now, I looked up all my service records recently and managed to locate a number of old shipmates via the Old Boys Association, which is still very active -- it is worth a visit. Re: Tauranga Port, New Zealand
Thanks Peter, Leo and self were going out East in 57, China Nav in those days even supplied you with a sextant I beleive. I had just met the wife and dropped out at the last minute. Often wonder if would still be alive today if had gone out East in those days was always a strong believer of workng hard and playing even harder. Leo was a year younger than me so if still alive would be 76. Will try the internet, did once before and asked on Swires network but got no reply. Cheers John S.

Re: Tauranga Port, New Zealand
I was there in early January, very nice part of the world with a number of timber carrying ships in port. Very enjoyable place to visit with so much to see, great Kiwi growing region.

Happy daze John in Oz.
