I remember a story told to us by a lecturer.
In Brighton (I believe) a new TV factory was set up with two production lines, both making Tv's to the same spec, same case etc. Only difference one was badged Japanese, the other GEC.
The Japanese Tv's outsold the Gec ones.
Isn't Sony supposed to stand for Somewhere Outside New York.
GEC's old TV factory was in Slough Hirwan Estate , Langley Park and was the old Sobell factory , this merged with the Hitachi consumer electrics group
As for SONY Its founders Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka derived the name from sonus, the Latin word for sound, and also from the English slang word "sonny", since they considered themselves to be "sonny boys", a loan word into Japanese which in the early 1950s connoted smart and presentable young men

Terry , due to modern crewing numbers , the deck patrol looking for men overboard only checks musters every third Tuesday of the month , keep paddling. Someone will throw a lifebelt when the muster realises that you may have drown . This is modern times when pay is cut , manning is cut , but if you managed to drink the Christmas Hamper you are probably only half cut
