Ship Building in the U.K.

I'm sure Pilkington glass built a float glass plant under licence in Poland many years ago.It's just been announced that about 200 workers are being laid off at the float glass plant due to a lack of demand for glass in the UK at the moment.We should all boycott Cadbury's seeing that they took it upon themselves to take the factory to Poland for cheap labour,nothing to do with to many strikes called by the unions.

So Scotland votes to stay with the UK because Westminster leaned on BAE. I don't think so, if the Scot's want independence they will vote for it whatever. As a Pompey boy born and bread, it sickens me to see the demise of a once Great Navy, that has caused the run down of not only Portsmouth Dockyard. God forbid, should this Country ever have to go to war again where are the skills going to come from to rebuild our armed forces. I think the UK government has decided on the bear minimum of conventional forces and are going to rely heavily on a nuclear deterrent. As for jobs going to other Countries we need to get cost's down, in order to put us back on a level playing field with our competitors, how we achieve it, your guess is as good as mine. Do nothing and there won't be any jobs to talk of for our grandchildren.

Looking at the simple maths if the Salmon takes Scotland away from the
United Kingdom , then he takes away 41 Westminster labour Mps , it is in David Cameron's party interests to break the union it wil give him a majority , so slimming Pompy dockyard is against his best interest

Vic a lot of us if we cast our minds back to the early 50"s can remember the rubbish Japan turned out which was always a copy of some other Nations work, they were well known as a Nation of imitators or copiers, their toys and such were made out of old tin cans and covered with material and we thought they were wonderful as they were so cheap .They even built a city and called it USA so that the could stamp their products made in U.S.A. Over the years though they have advanced tremendously and are now regarded as one of the worlds leading manufacturers, the old saying to Victors go the Spoils is totally untrue as we came out of 2 world wars definitely poorer but it seems no wiser. HMS Andromeda was a Leander-class frigate of the Royal Navy. She was built at HM Dockyard Portsmouth, the last ship to be built there. She was launched on 24 May 1967 and commissioned into the Royal Navy on 2 December 1968. She took part in the Falklands War and was sold to India in 1995, being renamed INS Krishna. She was finally decommissioned in May 2012.

Not just shipbuilding changing, here in Oz yesterday Quaintarse announced that 300 jobs will go in the aircraft maintainance division. The neew breed of aircraft do not require so much attention so less workers required. Ford are closing down in 2016 as it is no longer a viable proposition here, General Motors Holden and Toyota will not be far behind. One worker admitted that over the years unions had pushed continuously for wage rises with no productivity attatched to it. Now the chooks come home to roost. Then the Labor opposition, made up of about 50% ex union men, demand the giov do something about the job losses. But the fact is a job exists for one reason only, a demand for the product or service associated with that position. No demand, then no job.
