After reading some of these posts about Singapore yes it is a very clean lovely city now .But if you guys could have seen it in 1942 to 1945 you would be amazed at the change they have done to the place
Capt. Kong is that the original Skandi Bar? For some reason I recall it was upstairs, or was that Yackos? Either way I have way too many memories of both (: I have been back several times when on biz in Argentina & Chile, the latter always Santiago but when time permitted would go down to Valpo & look out on the harbour over the city & remember with a smile great times. For whatever reason never looked up the bars in Valpo. On saying that I have in B.A. though the shacks are not there now days but the others in '25 May' are as are some of the good restaurants. Did anyone ever go to the Tango places? I did not unfortunately, though will make a point of it in the New Year when there.
One of those memories is the ladies in Yackos got thrown in nick on one occasion for whatever, all of them...Anyway three of us decided to go visit them in the nick, heaven help us they let us in, it was pretty rough too, to visit them can you believe it?
I left a question for you Capt. Kong as felt if anyone knew the answer it would be you. It was in regards a photo of QE2 always on ships flying red ensign. Reason for question is someone has said adamantly, "there was always one on every ship?" My response was, "well I did not ever to my recollection see one, even on the Brasil Star unless in passenger accommodation" assuming he was always on line-passenger ships where as I was on in the main tramps. Interesting though was I just oblivious to it?
Ivan thanks for that explanation apropos Peruvian firemen, much appreciated as I always wondered about it.
Hi Le. It is the original Scandi Bar,

Did you mean was there a Red ensign on the QE2? If so then yes.

Adios
Brian.
I've only seen pictures Louis, and I believe it was a real tish-hole,especially in the Changi region !
I was last there in the late 80's and yes,I've always loved it,what a beautiful city---Clifford Pier,Sentosa,Raffles Hotel,Orchard Road, fabulous shopping,Bugis Street..
A very law-abiding,largely crime-free state--that's the way to run a country.Chewing gum ban and large fines for dropping litter - fantastic-we should have that here.
Also I remember hair length below the collar for men was frowned upon,-- they warned you that you may not get served in government offices, post offices etc.if you had long(ish) hair. But what the heck--we didn't go ashore just to go to the post office did we?..
Happy memories!
Remember Grant Road in Bombay
Lou I was back there in JUne, first time into the city since 1964 though have been to the airport, it is hard to believe it is the same place now. The cleanliness is almost antiseptic and the air so clean. Good industry going there as well, great hotels and good food.
