No need to back away from your original Posting ,Kenny.
What many of your Critics responses portray is not unexpected.
What they fail to realise is ,the same people who employed Seafarers , also owned the Local Press.Along with the Stevedorindg Companies.
It took a lot of hard work to gain conditions on the Waterfront
Taking into consideration those factors. It not surprising that such a negative opinion was produced .
Stand tall! Many seamen may be grateful ,for the help they received (on the Aussie Coast ( for sure.)
I was responsible in enabling a Crew_ member of a Blue Star ship> .To be returned Home to Liverpool,(His Father, supposedly dying)
To learn later< from other Crew members. His Story was untrue.unfortunately. Just using that episode as an example . Numerous underpayments to exploited Third World Crews ,were rectified.
Not wishing to be too controversial ,I'd like to point out that any pecuniary advantages gained .Either at Sea or on the Wharf. Flowed on to the Upper Classes. an d it was not unusual whilst at sea. ,for a certificated 2nd. or so. Would point, out inadequate conditions ,of their
employment. and suggest as N.U.S. members. We were in a better position ,to improve all round conditions.
There were many hard and dangerous jobs associated with the Wharf. Many serious accidents etc.
And many great and responsible Members.
Hope the regular visitor to Port Mebourne and critic. is looking in.
Will give a few Wharfies names he may next enquire about, in the meantime. .Just Google Martin Pash. Passed away very recently Port Melb boy. Last survivor of the blue funnel lines Centaur.
Toss around big Del Wright, .worked a full 12hr shift , Fought that same evening
for the Australian Heavyweight Championship, losing narrowly on Points..Also enquire of the Port Melbourne wharfie, gunned down during a Protest ,to improve conditions, some years earlier.
Liverpool City Council have now repaid the Government £8.8 million the Pier Head Terminal will now have full turnaround status. News of this brought howls from ports such as Southampton. All the hard work carried out by Liverpool CC has now paid off.Ti's ashame that Captain Robin Woodall passed away before this event came off,he was campaigning for the "Get ON Board" cruise petition to make Liverpool a turnaround port.
Regards.

lets hope the pay scale is not the same for the staff on the terminal as it is for the crews of the liners? i look forward to seeing the river busy again i wonder if we will get the dredgers back that would be a good sight again in the river.jp
The Labour MP for Southampton was on TV this morning said Liverpool is operating the t/around illegally and that L'pool has not yet had full clearance from Europe,he was also on about the £8.8 million Liverpool paid is not enough and they will need to pay more. These "mush's" will do anything to block Liverpool from attracting cruise liners here.
Regards.

Jim clearance from Europe?????? it took 8 years to get one answer from Europe over the hook!!!!! we want to tell Europe to sling there hook it's done Liverpool will do it weather or not we get permission from foreigners?jp
i like Duncan Smith`s talk at conference yesterday, he says the European Commision insist that any European coming here should be able to draw benefit from day one, his answer to that was basically , get stuffed, but of course that is conference talk. We await action KT
i may be wrong{often am}but if i were to emigrate to oz or NZ don't you need money in the bank now those are still part of the commonwealth. but we in the UK can give tax payers money to people most don't like our way of life and will not mix with us that is just one reason we should dump this EU thing we are slowly being taken over and its time to make our rules and tell them what we in the UK want not being dictated to all the time.jp
