Maritime Safety Agency
I liked that bit which stated 'One travelled Business Class because of the overall journey time' Must have been an awful traumatic experience travelling all the way from the UK to Monaco, you have to feel for the poor soul. Bet the other three were a bit miffed having to travel all that way in Economy

AMSA
In Australia the Ruling Authority has to my knowledge always been the Australian Maritime Safety Authority which undertook the same duties of the old Board of Trade and the Dept. Trade and Industry in the UK. This is a government department with the same duties as the old B.O.T. Amsa was responsible for the overseeing of all maritime disasters and such, the ship reporting system of vessels within the confines of Australian waters and the examination for certificates of competency. There are obviously other duties as well regarding shipping. When the UK transferred their maritime duties to the Coastguard I could not really envisage this,I suppose I was totally out of touch with the Coastguards authority as always imagined them sitting in a lookout station at Dover looking for vessels who were not obeying the routing instructions through the approaches and the straits, and other such like duties. I did not particularly think of them as ex seafarers. When these further duties were given them what happened to all the well respected Examiners and Surveyors from the old BOT and DTI. Reading the post about the junket trip to Monacao, perhaps having this new authority they have realized they can act like any senior government department and are making the most of it. Regards John Sabourn.
