Narrow Escapes of WW11
Narrow Escapes of WW11 ~ Operation Pedestal
Sunday 18th December 2011 @ 11.00am Yesterday Channel : Sky 537, Virgin 203 & Freeview 12
Narrow Escapes tells the real stories of courageous and deadly fights against impossible odds during World War II.
This brand new, continuing series tells the extraordinary stories of heroes; men who stand up and fight when everything seems lost.
Those brilliant generals, ferocious warriors and individual acts of courage that can turn the tide in a war, and whose stories can still be told as shining examples of bravery and courage.
Fights like the siege of Tobruk – where Australian General Moreshead and his ninth division held off Rommel’s army for five months, to provide enough time to stop the Desert Fox reaching Egypt and the Suez Canal. Or Operation Pedestal, where the master of the tanker Ohio, Dudley Mason, received the George Cross for resupplying Malta in the face of continuous submarine and air assaults all the way from Gibraltar.
Each episode will focus on one narrow escape and what effect it had on the outcome of events.
Another episode of the 13-part series features interviews with the five remaining survivors from Operation Doolittle. The operation was designed by President Roosevelt in the days after Pearl Harbour to show the Japanese that they were not safe from attack.
The problem was that the B-25 bombers could take off from the specially adapted US warship that took them to within striking distance of Tokyo, but they could not land on it once the attack was complete. So the brave pilots set off on a mission where they knew it was highly likely they would not return.
It's these stories that changed the course of history, and ensured that the Allies were free from the tyranny of Hitler once and for all.
