    Default Looking for Grandad.

    Hi,
I'm looking for my Grandad (this reminds me of a joke, have you seen him anywhere, I dunno what's he like, best bitter and girls with ample bosoms.)
I have managed to find his Discharge A number after a search in the medal card section of the National Archives. I tried looking in BT 319 the Index to Registered Cooks, but that was a bit harder and I got lost. As far as I can make out he was a ships cook in 1908 when he got married. In 1920 he was issued the Mercantile Marine Medal and the British Medal, I'm sure I remember seeing 4 medals when I was a kid in the late 40s.
The National Archieves has him listed as
    Philip Arthur Adams
    Born: Southampton 1884
    Discharge A 549181

    and a RS2 No 812709

In 1908 he was living at
    49 Hopwood St
    Sculcoates
    Hull.
But there is no 49 in the 1911 Census. in 1920 the medals were sent to
    32 Cambridge St
    Anlaby Rd
    Hull

the family story is when he was 14 living in South Africa he ran away to sea. It could be that he was born in Southampton and his parents moved to South Africa and he was home sick. In his obituary from 1951 there is a mention of 2 sisters in South Africa
Is there sufficient information here to find which ships he was on?
    Hope you guys can help
    Thanks
    Casso.

    Possible long shot
There was a Phillip Adams signed on the “Galileo” as Ships Cook aged 40 with 25 years service his height was 5’ – 5” weight 146 lbs
The ship arrived in New York on the 21st June 1926 having sailed from Hull then Antwerp 5th June 1926, the ship sailed again fro Hull on the 2nd July 1926

    he is recorded several times

I suggest that you contact Southampton Archive link gives details
    http://www.southampton.gov.uk/s-leis...tralindex.aspx

    P.S.
There was a Phillip Adams arrived back in Southampton on the 7th September 1926 aboard the “Berengaria”as a DBS (with approx 32 other seamen) he was aged 42, gave an address as 32 Cambridge Street Hull,

He may also have been signed on the “Kyno” as ships Cook signed on in Hull on the 22April 1927, the ship arrived in Boston 17th May 1927 having sailed from Hull

    Hi Ray,
I looked up the Galileo. She was one of Ellerman Wilsons, she was returning from NY to Hull when a fire was discovered in her coal bunkers so she went back to NY and they flooded her on30th Aug 1926 to put out the fire. The Kyno was also Ellermans so I guess my grandad being from Hull spent a lot of time with Ellermans.

I've got to find out how to get a copy of his discharge book/papers but first I'll learn to walk, as they say.

I still can't find his date of birth, there is no sign of him in England from 1883 through 1890 in the BMD or Census. It's like my family was put together by MI5 or something.

Thanks for the link to the Southampton Archives I'll be asking them to send me all the've got on my grandad.

I've been looking for something to do now I'm retired, better not let my wife see this she gave me a list of things I've neglected.

    Thanks again
    Casso.

    Hi Ray,
I've got to ask you where did you get your information from, I am mightily impressed by it. I have been doing research on my family for 2 years or more and always got stuck when it came to my Grandfather. On his Marriage certificate it Says his father John Matthew Adams is a Master Mariner which I always took with a pinch of salt but yesterday I found him in the Captains Register of Lloyds. He got his certificate C08829 in South Shields in 1885 and I was wondering if there is a way of finding which ships he sailed on.
I have never been able to find my Grandfathers date of birth or place of birth other than in the information you gave me.Now I think if his father was a ships captain he could have been born at sea as a lot of captains had no homes only the ship they sailed on so they took their wives with them, at least that's what I get from reading Alan Villiers.
I am waiting for a reply from Southampton telling me what it will take to get more information on my grandfather, it seems like information on seafarers is dotted about all over the place.

    Casso.
