This morning on BBC 2 they showed the classic film, THE MAGGIE of a coal burning Clyde Puffer a smaller version of the one I was on in 1952, the film was made in 1954 so it brought back a lot of memories, Also a good view of the Clyde with lots of ships from our days loading cargoes and being built. The Characters are very true to life in those halcyon days of Coasting

PARAHANDY, THE VITAL SPARK another classic of coasting on a coal burner in those good old days of the 50s
My only fault with the classic stories, is the men are too clean, we were all covered in coal dust in those days and unshaven.

I loved the episode where the rich Englishman in his Bentley was chatting up Hamish's girlfriend. Hamish told him he couldn't drive around in the Bentley with a defective light. The toff said "What defective light?" Hamish smashed a headlight with his cosh, and said "That one!" Scottish Police Humour?

About 1948-50 my father was working in the West of Scotland, and rented a house on the Holy Loch for the school holidays, while renting out our house in St Andrews to Glasgow holidaymakers (I think he made a profit on the deal!). The house in Kilmun had water on three sides when the tide was in, and I could dive out the back window straight into the loch. The Puffer used to go round the loch delivering coal! One day I was out on the loch fishing in my rowing boat, when there was a roaring noise from a peculiar-looking boat as it sped past throwing up fountains of water. I discovered years later that it was the hull of the old North British paddle steamer Lucy Ashton, fitted with a jet engine as experimental propulsion. Interesting times!

#4 That was a beauty. Everyone in it - the clairvoyant John, Lachie etc. And Wee Jock the Highland Terrier. I had a seven seater Peugeot that I used to, in spare time, take tourists on round trips and particularly across from Perth to through Crieff, Loch Earn to Oban and back through Ballachulish and Glencoe. A couple of times the long way round by Inverness. I love to see those beautifully crafted BBC programmes.
