#34 Too true Blue. Bill whatever his surname was I had a couple of PMs from asking if I knew various people in John I Jacobs. He informed me he had an extra master certificate and said I should have carried on and got. Which made me wonder at the time when he had got his as in 1963 when I was feeling the water on such it entailed at least 2 years at your own expense at some nautical establishment. Was not a seamans certificate as such as went into economic geography, oceanography, world affairs and some other weird subjects, think politics was somewhere in the picture, so will stop there. I was married by this time and was no way I could afford 2 years ashore on fresh air, and in any case was the last thing a shipowner wanted as knew it was the key to a shore job in the MOT (politics again ). He was what I saw from his emails a product of the old school which embraced a lot of the old caste system. However sorry to hear of his death, most of us are living on borrowed time in any case so every one is a little bit closer to the inevitable. Anyhow in this great world of ours we have always been able to pick our friends, its the rellies we get stuck with. Cheers JS

In my time at sea and beyond I only ever met people with an extra Masters who were working ashore for the Department of trade and Industry as marine surveyors examiners . I've only met two engineers who went for Extras strangely enough both stayed at sea but they took over a year off in sea time and leave to study before doing the exam . My feeling was it was more of a qualification for shoreside being degree equivalent . As after I believe 1970 the class 1 or first class engineers certificate no longer can't do the qualification for a chartered engineer . Where I believe extras did so sure it was probably equivalent of a master's degree

Rob your right, in 1964 I was approached by the DTI surveyor in Glasgow who had completed a survey a few days earlier. I met him at the top of the gangway and was starting to apologise, thinking he had come back to check if I had extended the lifeboat ladders. I had the wife on board at the time. He said he had only come back for a social visit and a drink, I had visions of getting the old rum bottle out so was a bit disappointed when it turned out he was referring to a cup of tea. At the time I was doing a correspondence course for Extras which he didn't know about, but he brought the subject up about the Ministry and how they would allow 2 years to get. However never got round to mentioning a monetary figure. Anyhow shortly after I had to give up the correspondence course as even the hire of the books was getting prohibitive. I was on 101 pounds 12/6d a month at the time with 27 pounds 2/6d in lieu of overtime and had a mortgage and a wife and young family to support and even that was struggling on. So whatever the DTI would have paid would have been much less I imagine. As you say and I agree it was a ticket to ride ashore and no advantage at sea. I think 1982 , boiler up at funnel level leaked thermal oil , caught light , fire in the exhaust casing , the mate gave me the fire party on the car deck , and looking at several hundred cars with full fuel tanks vanished , what we did was not by the book . the fire was soon out . i turned round and the engineer surveyor who passed my class 1 steam was behind me . interested in thermal oil , was taking his wife to France , no heating MDO wont atomise when cold , long conversation over a cup of coffee , whilst the skipper decided where he wanted to go with about an hour before the fuel was useless we were off Ryde Pier, go back to Portsmouth would be best , but he had commercial people putting all sorts of pressure on , well the surveyor got talking ab,out wages , as second I was on 30% more , and he had 10 years seniority

Hi Jim, Hope all is well with yourself and family. Doesn't seam that long since we were having a pint or two up there in Liverpool. Great meet ups shame they are defunct now, but hey ho Jim with any luck we may yet have another pint or two one day (god willing).
