    Default The spirit

Went to see the movie Dunkirk today.

No doubt as good an adaptation as we will ever see but without too many big name actors.

I think the producers kept as rue to the story as they could and I found it most enjoyable.

But as I sat I thought about those men, the ones on the beach trapped and waiting for survival, but more so of those who went out in small boats to do their bit for the country and rescue these men.

It was the spirit of these men, and some women, who showed the world the true English spirit of survival.
Putting their own civilian lives on the line to rescue these men trapped on the beach.

It is a spirit I knew as a young lad growing up in England at a time when being English meant you were just that, English not some blow in who later claims to be one and the benefits that go with it.

It was that spirit that kept the nation afloat during not just the war but other times when the going got tough.

It is that spirit that is in great need now whilst you struggle with another enemy, now found on the other side of the Brexit negotiations.
If ever the spirit of Dunkirk was needed it is now.

Revive that spirit and show the world just how strong you are.
    Happy daze John in Oz.

I am outraged, I am ropeable to the extreme.

It was announced today on talk back radio that in USA this movie had been the highest ever first week box office taker.

The on comes some plonker who said.

My mum was a war bride and she told me the movie was crap. It never happened that way there was no amada of small ships, just gov propogandar to make it look good.
he got a serve, and rightly so, from the guy on talk back.

Not sure what medication his mum is on but it sure as hell don't work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My wife and I saw the film yesterday in Auckland and really enjoyed the showing. My father and several of his brothers, all fishermen were involved but non of them really opened up and told of their experiences, a great pity really. The film is the subject of TIME magazines feature story this coming week. Cheers, Peter in Auckland NZ.

Looking back yesterday at som eof our family tree history I found a bit about the husband of mums cousin from Weymouth.
His family had a fishing boat and that was one of the ones taken by Admiralty for use on evecuation of Dunkirk.
